2024 NAIA Men's Basketball National Championship Semifinal Recap

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – [Schedule | Bracket] The top-seed of the tournament was knocked-off by Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) before Langston (Okla.) grabbed a win over the defending champs to end a thriller at Municipal Auditorium in the semifinal round of the 2024 NAIA Men’s Basketball National Championship. Both teams will battle for their first NAIA Men’s Basketball Red Banner on Tuesday night on ESPN3. Neil Harwell, Coach Rich Zvosec and Hayley Lewis will have the broadcast for the 7:00 p.m. CT tip. GAME NOTES/HIGHLIGHTS

  • This marks Grace’s 3rd trip to the NAIA Fab Four
  • Grace concludes their season with a 34-2 overall record, the most wins in school history
  • Jakob Gibbs led the Lancers in scoring at the half with nine, he would go onto finish with a team
  • Three players from Grace finished in double-figures: Gibbs (23), Elijah Malone (12), and Jake Wadding (10)
  • Wadding recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Malone finished one rebound short of a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds
  • Grace shot 43% (28-65) from field goal range and 47% (16-34) from beyond the arc
  • Jakob Gibbs recorded his second highest scoring game of this year’s NAIA Tournament with 23, with the highest coming against Union (Ky.) in the Second Round with 28

 

GAME NOTES/HIGHLIGHTS

  • This marked the first-ever NAIA National Championship semifinal appearance in program history for the Lions
  • FHU will now play in its first-ever NAIA Men’s Basketball National Championship game
  • Freed-Hardeman led at the half, 38-35
  • They outscored the Lancers, 48-46 in the second half
  • The game featured five ties and seven lead changes
  • The Lions outscored Grace in the paint, 32-24
  • The FHU defense forced 19 turnovers and scored 24 points off of those turnovers
  • FHU had five players score in double figures, as JJ Wheat led the team with 20
  • Peyton Law scored 17, Ryley McClaran added 14, Sam Powell scored 12 and Hunter Scurlock poured in 11
  • The Lions shot well from the floor, shooting 29-of-59 for 49.2-percent

GAME NOTES/HIGHLIGHTS

  • Langston is in the middle of their first trip to the NAIA Fab Four
  • The Lions currently own a 35-1 overall record and continue their best season is school history
  • Langston Head Coach Chris Wright is making his second trip to the NAIA National Championship, with his first trip being in 2022 with Talladega (Ala.)
  • The score was tied at 27 at the halftime break
  • The lead changed hands seven times throughout the contest and was tied 10 times
  • Langston held College of Idaho to zero field goals in the last 3:59
  • Cortez Mosley poured in 10 points to lead the Lions in scoring in the first half
  • D’Monte Brown exploded in the second half, scoring all 12 of his points after the halftime break
  • The Lions shot 23-60 from the field, which was good for 38.3%
  • Langston lead both teams in assists, dishing out 16 compared to the Yotes’ seven
  • The Lions outrebounded College of Idaho 36-35
  • Langston outscored the Yotes in the paint, 32 to 26, and scored 11 points off turnovers
  • Cortez Mosley and D’Monte Brown led the Lions in double-figures with 14 and 12 respectively

  • The Yotes are now 38-23 all-time at the event, this marked their first ever loss in the Fab Four
  • CI won last years NAIA Men’s Basketball National Championship
  • College of Idaho scored its fewest points of the season on Monday, their fewest prior to that was 64 points on December 30 in a 64-57 win over Eastern Oregon
  • Samaje Morgan led the Yotes in scoring with 17 points, it marked the 29th time this season that he has scored in double figures
  • Jake O’Neil was the only other Yote to score in double figures with 10
  • The Yotes held Langston to just 38.3-percent shooting on 23-of-60
  • They also held LU to just 28.6-percent from three-point range on 6-of-21
