Montana Western Opens Pool Play with Sweep
SIOUX CITY, Iowa [BOX SCORE] - In a matchup between the William Carey (Miss.) Crusaders and the Montana Western Bulldogs in the 2024 NAIA Women's Volleyball Championship pool play round, Montana Western emerged victorious with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-21) win.
The Crusaders posted two more kills than the Bulldogs with 39 in the match. Jazi Smith led Montana Western with 10 kills, while Danyel Martin contributed seven kills. Taylor Petersen of UMW led the offense with 17 assists.
UMW had a bigger impact at the service line (UMW 8: WCU 3) and defending the net (UMW 15 assisted: WCU 10 [2 solo]). Kelsey Goddard led the Bulldogs with 15 digs, while Madisyn Frazier added 13 digs.
Conversely, William Carey struggled with their attacking efficiency, hitting only .120 as a team. Suelen Lima led the team with 16 kills, but it wasn't enough to overcome Montana Western.
Montana Western captured its first pool play win in championship history.
William Carey (Miss.) is eliminated from the tournament. Montana Western will play its final pool play match against Northwestern (Iowa) at 10 a.m. CT Friday.
