2023 NAIA Women's Tennis National Championship Semifinal Recap

Mobile, Ala. – (Bracket | Schedule) For the fifth-straight year, Keiser (Fla.) and Georgia Gwinnett will be playing for the 2023 NAIA Women’s Tennis National Championship title.   

 

Game Notes & Highlights

  • Top ranked Keiser dispatched Tennessee Wesleyan, 4-0. The Seahawks took the doubles point by winning No. 2 (6-0) and No. 3 (6-0).
  • Elyse Lavender (No. 1; 6-0, 6-0), Violet Apisah (No. 2; 6-1, 6-2) and Yvette Schmucker (No. 4; 6-2, 6-1) won the singles points for the Seahawks with the clincher coming from Schmucker.
  • Keiser will be making its fifth finals appearance and fourth-straight. The Seahawks claimed the title in 2003.
  • No. 2 Georgia Gwinnett downed Southeastern (Fla.), 4-1. The Grizzlies won No. 2 doubles (6-0) and No. 3 doubles (6-0) to claim the point.
  • The Grizzles won No. 2 singles, No. 5 singles and No. 6 singles, as Justine Lespes (7-5, 6-1), Angel Carney (6-0, 6-1) and Stephanie Fernandez (6-0, 6-2) won their matches, respectively.
  • Georgia Gwinnett is back in the finals for the ninth-straight year, winning in 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022. There was not a tournament held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • 2023 will mark the fifth-straight time the same teams will face each other in the finals. This will be the longest streak, breaking the tie with Auburn Montgomery (Ala.) and Fresno Pacific (Calif.) which met in four-straight from 2006-2009.
