Dunn Named NAIA Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has announced that Keiser (Fla.) Head Coach Mat Dunn has been named the 2020 Select Sport America - NAIA Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year. This is Dunn’s second consecutive coach of the year honor in the NAIA after earning his second national title in a row.
Dunn guided his Seahawks to a 2-1 overtime victory over William Carey (Miss.) on May 3 to go back-to-back as national champions. He finished last season 19-2-2 overall on the season.
After suffering the second and final loss of the season to William Carey in a home match on March 6, Dunn’s squad rebounded with a 5-0 win over Truett McConnell (Ga.) before traveling to the Midwest and earning a 1-0 victory over Columbia (Mo.) in the NAIA National Championship Opening Round. The team advanced to the NAIA National Championship final site and earned a 6-0 decision over Cumberlands (Ky.) before advancing to the national championship final with a 1-1 draw against Spring Arbor (Mich.) and outscoring the Cougars 4-3 in penalty kicks.
For their efforts, Maja Henriksson, Josefine Troneby, Kyoka Koshijma, Emma Holmzkov and Matilda Ovenberger were all named to the NAIA National Championship All-Tournament team. Additionally, Henriksson was named the Most Outstanding Defensive Player while Ovenberger was named Most Valuable Player.
Overall, the Seahawks had three honorees as 2020 NAIA Women’s Soccer All-America First Team selections. Maja Henriksson, Josefine Troneby, and Emma Holmzkov were all named to the team in 2020, tied for the most representatives of any institution on the first team with Martin Methodist (Tenn.). Additionally, Kyoka Koshijma was named to the second team, while Maja Lundman and Nohara Takayama were named honorable mentions for their contributions over the course of the season.
The 2020 Select Sport America-NAIA National Coach of the Year is voted on by the NAIA Women’s Soccer Coaches Association and is typically announced at the annual National Convention. Due to the change in championship schedules due to COVID-19, the award was held until after the end of the season, which was on May 3, 2021. To be eligible, a head coach must be selected as their conference or unaffiliated group coach of the year or lead their team to the NAIA Women’s Soccer National Championship postseason play.
