2019 NAIA Women’s Soccer National Championship – Championship Recap

Orange Beach, Ala. – [Box Score] [Bracket] Keiser (Fla.) netted two goals in a matter of four minutes and 13 seconds in the first half to claim its first NAIA Women’s Soccer National Championship in team history with an 2-0 win over No. 12-seeded Marian (Ind.).

After a back-and-forth battle to start play on a chilly evening on Alabama’s Gulf Coast, the Seahawks struck first with a rocket from the right side of the box from Tova Nilsson to give her squad a 1-0 lead.

Just minutes later, Matilda Ovenberger made it 2-0. The Keiser goal-scoring leader posted what may be one of the biggest goals of her career as she worked around a Marian defender to slide the ball just past Alexis Patenaude. The tally was Ovenberger’s 22nd of the season and first of the championship final site.

Just over five minutes into the second half, the Knights nearly cut into the Seahawks’ lead. Chloe Ulmer put a head on a perfect cross from the far, right-hand side of the box, but sailed it just over the crossbar.

Keiser finished the match with a sound defensive effort as Nina Haeberlin shut the door on Marian. The senior recorded her 14th shutout in the win and set a new Seahawks’ record for shutouts in a career with 24. Keiser finished its historic season 24-1-0.
