Recap of the 2024 NAIA Women's Basketball Championship Quarterfinals

SIOUX CITY, Iowa -  [BRACKETSCHEDULE & RESULTS]  Two upsets and two conference match-ups highlighted the quarterfinal round of the 2024 NAIA Women's Basketball Championship final site, presented by Sterling and Bomgaars. Only one No. 1 seed advanced to the semifinals, while the lowest seed remaining is No. 3. Three of the four teams remaining have never advanced to the semifinals before. 

 

GAME NOTES/HIGHLIGHTS

No. 2 Providence (Mont.) (26-8) def. No. 1 Marian (Ind.) (33-2), 78-68 | Box Score 

  • Providence (Mont.) grabbed the lead from the start with a three-point shot off the hand of Maddy Dixon, which put the Argos on the board. UP boasted its largest lead in the third quarter with an 18-point difference after a shot from the floor by Kolby Pimperton.
  • Providence did what only one other team was able to do this season and dealt Marian (Ind.) its second loss. The Argos put a halt to the Knight's 31-game win streak.
  • This is the first time that UP will play in the semifinals.
  • Ella Collier of Marian led all scorers with 30 points. Ashlee Maldonado of Providence followed with 28 points of her own. Both teams had three players who recorded double-digit points in the contest.
  • Keanna Salave’a of UP recorded her second double-double at the final site with 17 points and 10 rebounds (8 def, 2 off).

No. 2 Carroll (Mont.) (28-5) def. No. 4 Dakota State (S.D.) (28-7), 71-56 | Box Score

  • Carroll (Mont.) was the first on the board with a jumper from Jamie Pickens. The Fighting Saints held that initial lead into the second quarter when Dakota State (S.D.) started to gain some momentum. The Trojans went on a 13-point run at the end of the second quarter that was capped off with a long three at the buzzer from Lilli Mackley narrowed the scoring gap to two points. Carroll remained steady after the half and built its two-point lead up to as many as 15 points in the final quarter.
  • The Fighting Saints ended the game at 58.3% from beyond the arc, which was 39.1% higher than that of DSU.
  • Jamie Pickens of Carroll led all scorers with 24 points and posted a double-double, adding 18 rebounds (15 def, 3 off) to her stat line. Pickens also dished out six assists.
  • Maddie Geritz was also big on the glass for the Fighting Saints, adding 11 rebounds (6 def, 5 off) to her double-double that included 13 points. Geritz and teammate Kyndall Keller also contributed to their teammate's success with four assists apiece.
  • Angela Slattery of DSU followed Pickens with 16 points.
  • Carroll advances to the semifinals for the first time.

Carroll and Providence will face each other for the fifth time this season. The teams will enter the contest 2-2 against each other on the season, with UP having won the most recent game, which was the Frontier Conference Championship. 



No. 3 Cumberlands (Ky.) (26-9) def. No. 1 Campbellsville (Ky.) (31-2), 88-77 | Box Score

  • Cumberlands (Ky.) opened up the scoring with a jump shot from Lakin Burke to be the first on the board. The Patriots maintained the lead throughout the entirety of the contest and posted their largest lead of 17 points in the fourth quarter with a shot from beyond the arc off the hand of Destiny Haworth.
  • Three players boasted 20 points: Kayla Luebbe of Campbellsville and the twins Kassie and Kaylie Monday of Cumberlands.
  • Kassie Monday and Channing Lewis distributed the ball to their teammates well throughout the night for eight assists apiece.
  • The Patriots posted an impressive 61.5% from the field compared to the Tigers 43.6%.
  • This is the first time that Cumberlands has advanced to the semifinals.

 No. 1 Dordt (Iowa) (33-2) def. No. 7 Briar Cliff (Iowa) (24-10), 65-62 | Box Score

  • Dordt (Iowa) and Briar Cliff (Iowa) traded the lead through the first two quarters until the Defenders went on a 13-4 run late in the second quarter and took a 32-25 lead to the locker room. The teams traded buckets until early in the fourth quarter Dordt boasted its largest lead of 13 points. The Defenders then went scoreless for five minutes while the Charges chipped away at the scoring deficit and closed the gap to one point with 11 seconds left. Macy Sievers of Dordt was sent to the line and made her two shots to extend the differential to three points. Nine seconds left in the game with only a three-point difference and the final three-point shot from BCU bounced off the rim and into the hands of the Defenders for the win.
  • Dordt was 41.4% from the field compared to Briar Cliff 27.5%.
  • Mallie Mcnair of Briar Cliff led all scorers with 27 points.
  • The Defenders had two players record over 20 points in the contest: Macy Sievers (25) and Karly Gustafson (20). Gustafson and Janie Schoonhoven both recorded double-doubles on the night with 20 points, 13 reb (11 def, 2 off) and 13 points, 15 rebounds (12 def, 3 off), respectively.
  • Dordt is making its second appearance in the semifinals. 

Dordt is the sole No. 1 seed to advance to the semifinals. Neither team advancing has ever played each other in championship play before.
