Quarterfinals of the 2022 NAIA Women's Basketball Championship

SIOUX CITY, Iowa - [BRACKET | SCHEDULE | Box Scores] The Semifinals are locked in for the 2022 NAIA Women's Basketball Championship with Central Methodist (Mo.), Dordt (Iowa), Southeastern (Fla.) and Thomas More (Ky.) winning their respective quarterfinal on Saturday in the Tyson Events Center. 

The semifinals will be played on Monday night and will be streamed on ESPN3. 


Southeastern (Fla.) def. Morningside (Iowa) 84-79

The lead was initially captured by Southeastern in the first game of the day. The teams would have eight lead changes and eight ties before a tie score of 55 in the third quarter. The Fire went on a 7-2 run to take the lead that they would maintain through the remainder of the game. The Mustangs closed the gap to as much as three in the final quarter. 

Game Highlights

  • Sierra Mitchell of Morningside (Iowa) led all scorers with 27 points.
  • Sophia Peppers of Morningside was the only player with a double-double (18 points, 12 rebounds)
  • The Fire had a balanced attack with four of the team's five starters in double digits.
  • SEU advances to the semifinals for the second time. The last time they were in the semifinals was in 2019.
  • Southeastern knocked down 45.2% of their field goals and only bested Morningside by 3.3% from the field (SEU 43.3% | Morningside 40%).
  • SEU continues its win streak to 29 games.

Thomas More (Ky.) def. Rocky Mountain (Mont.) 60-58

A highly contested match-up between Thomas More and Rocky Mountain never saw the teams get more than 10 points away from each other. RMC took a one-point advantage into the fourth quarter and created some space with a six-point run. The Saints chipped away at the scoring gap and found themselves tied at 57 with 1:10 left in the game and secured the lead off a jump shot from Zoie Barth. A made free throw at both ends of the court kept the scoring gap at two points but it was Summer Secrist of TMU that secured the Saints win with a blocked shot at the buzzer. 

Game Highlights

  • N’Dea Flye of Rocky Mountain led all scorers with 19 points. She also pulled down 10 rebounds for a double-double.
  • Alexah Chrisman of Thomas More led the Saints with 12 points in the game and was one rebound shy of a double-double.
  • The Saints held the Battlin’ Bears to 11.1% in the field while posting 30.4% from their own arch.
  • Thomas More advances to the semifinals for the second time in as many years.

Central Methodist (Mo.) def. Marian (Ind.) 72-62

Central Methodist went on a 10-1 run in the first quarter to capture the lead and extended that lead to as much as 14. The Knights worked to close the scoring gap and came within four but the Eagles maintained their lead to capture the win and advance to the semifinals. 

 

Game Highlights

  • Abby Downard of Marian led all scorers with 19 points.
  • Arleighshya McElroy of Central Methodist led the Eagles with 18 points.
  • Eternati Wilock of CMU was the only player in the game to post a double-double (16 points, 14 rebounds)
  • Central Methodist had a balanced attack as all five of the starters were in double digits.
  • This is the second time that CMU has advanced to the semifinals. The last time the team advanced to the semifinals was in 1999.

FINAL SCORE: Dordt (Iowa) def. The Master’s (Calif.) 72-56

The Master’s jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter with a five-point run but Dordt answered with a six-point run of its own. The teams would remain close throughout the game with five ties and nine lead changes. With a tie score with 4:35 left in the game, Macey Nielson nailed a three-point jump shot that would start a 17-2 run where the Defenders held the Mustangs to advance to the semifinals.

Game Highlights

  • Ashtyn Veerbeek of Dordt led all scorers with 22 points.
  • Karly Gustafson of Dordt was the only player in the game that posted a double-double
  • Giani Wimbish-Gay of The Master’s led the Mustangs with 15 points.
  • The teams matched each other in field goals going 21-for-55 (38.2%). The difference came from beyond the arch where the defenders landed a nearly 14% difference.
  • Dordt was given 29 chances at the free-throw line and hit 25 of them (86.2%). The Defenders only put the Mustangs at the line nine times on the night.
