Stars Claim 11th Softball Red Banner in Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ga. – [BRACKET | SCHEDULE] In a game that many thought could go either way, Oklahoma City made a statement in the top of the first and never looked back. Behind three runs and another incredible pitching performance from Shelbey Cornelson, the Stars earned their 11th NAIA Softball National Championship Red Banner in team history with a 3-0 win on Wednesday.

Oklahoma City came out firing in the top of the first. Rally Radacy doubled to left field with one out to begin things and advanced to third on a Tiffany Paul single to put runners at the corners. Paul moved-up shortly thereafter on a stolen base, her first of the 2022 World Series, to put two runners in scoring position with just one away.

Lexi Duff provided the first runs of the game for the Stars. The senior singled on a high chopper to the left side, which plated both Paul and Radacy, to put Oklahoma City up by a pair.

The Stars added to their lead in the fourth. After Amy Crabaugh doubled down the right field line to lead-off the inning, the junior backstop came around to score on a Kennedy Jackson RBI single to extend the lead to 3-0. Crabaugh finished the day 3-for-3 at the plate.

After the championship concluded, Shelby Cornelson was announced as the 2022 NAIA Softball World Series MVP. The junior did it all in the circle for Oklahoma City. On top of her brilliant performance on Wednesday evening, she allowed just one run in 28 innings pitched with 10 strikeouts to her credit.

Oklahoma City led the 2022 Spring Classic in both batting average and slugging percentage on the offensive side, and in ERA with an incredible .025 ERA, all from Cornelson.

The Stars’ 11 NAIA Softball World Series titles is the most all-time in the sport. The next closest team championship total is former member Simon Fraser (B.C.) with four.
