Pool D Recap: Day Two (Friday)
GULF SHORES, Ala. - (RU vs. CBC Box Score) (LU vs. MC Box Score) Reinhardt (Ga.) and Lee (Tenn.) picked up a pair of wins on day two of pool play action Saturday at the NAIA Softball National Championship. The event is being held at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex for the second-straight year.
Reinhardt started the day by knocking off the pool's top seed Central Baptist (Ark.), 3-0, and Lee run-ruled Morningside (Iowa), 8-0, in five innings.
Maddie Monroe dominated in the circle for the Lady Eagles, limiting Central Baptist to three hits in a complete-game shutout. She struck out eight and walked three. Jessica Bock took the loss after giving up three unearned runs on four hits in 7 innings of work.
All three of the game's runs came in the top of the first inning, when Reinhardt used small ball and some help to score three. After a leadoff single from Nikki Roddy, three-straight bunts followed which plated two runs. The first bunt scored a run with aid from an error, and the last was a squeeze from Ashley Kennedy.
Lindsey Booker finished 2-for-3 for Reinhardt, while Natalye Chudy went 2-for-3 at the plate for Central Baptist.
In Lee's win, the Lady Flames used a five-run first inning to roll, while Brittany Balough allowed only two hits in five innings of shutout ball.
Nine hitters stepped up to the plate in that first inning. After a pair of singles and an out started the inning, four-straight hitters drove home a run. Ana Coscorrosa drove home the first run. The run-rule took effect in the fifth inning when three doubles from the Lee bats drove home a pair to end the game.
Charlie Wooden finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored, Jennifer Ringle went 2-for-3, and both Dezirae Parsons and Tabitha Farrow drove in a pair of runs for the Lady Flames. Taylor Michaelson went 2-for-2 for Morningside.
