Pool E Recap: Day Two (Friday)

Pool E Recap: Day Two (Friday)

GULF SHORES, Ala. - (LCU vs. LWC Box Score) (IUS vs. UU Box Score) Lubbock Christian (Texas) and Indiana Southeast picked up victories on the second day of pool play Friday at the 2012 NAIA Softball National Championship. The event is being held at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex for the second-straight year.

Indiana Southeast scored early and held on for a 3-0 win over Union (Tenn.) and Lubbock Christian put up six runs on twelve hits to take down Lindsey Wilson (Ky.), 6-2.

Lubbock used a three-run third inning to take the lead and then a two-run seventh helped put the game away.

The Lady Chaps' Sarah Mendez struck out 13 Blue Raiders in a complete-game effort. She allowed only one earned run on four hits. The bulk of the offensive damage came off the bat of Kim Frazier, who finished 3-for-4 with four RBI, while teammate Brittany Kent went 3-for-4 with two runs scored from the two-hole in the lineup. Emily Priar finished 1-for-3 with one RBI and a run scored for Lindsey Wilson.

After Lindsey Wilson turned Priar's leadoff walk in the first into a 1-0 lead, the Lady Chaps took the lead for good in the third with three runs on five hits. Mendez singled home one to start the scoring and then Frazier smacked a two-run single up the middle to push home the eventual game-winning runs.

The Grenadiers' win came with a nice blend of pitching and hitting, and Kayla Duke did some of both. Duke picked up the win in the circle with a complete-game shutout, limiting the Lady Bulldogs to three hits and three walks, while fanning five. At the plate, she was one of two hitters to record multiple hits, finishing 2-for-3. Nicole Mills finished 2-for-2 with two RBI for Indiana Southeast.

The only runs Indiana Southeast would need came in the top of the first with a two-out rally. Kate Toney drew a two-out walk to start the rally and then Mills and Rachel Mulvey went back-to-back with RBI-doubles.

In Pool E on Saturday, Lindsey Wilson will face Indiana Southeast at 10:30 a.m. CDT and Lubbock Christian will battle Union at 3:30 p.m.
