Concordia Breaks 16-year NAIA Softball Record

IRVINE, Calif. -- The accolades kept coming on Saturday, April 14, as the No. 1 Concordia (Calif.) Eagles defeated visiting Biola 5-3 and 7-0 in a GSAC doubleheader.

The Eagles entered the day ranked #1 in the nation and two wins short of the NAIA win-streak record of 43.  Concordia took care of business and accomplished that, and along the way, thanks to #8 Azusa Pacific losing to Vanguard, the Eagles wrapped up sole possession of the 2012 GSAC Regular-Season Championship.  It marks the second regular-season title in school history and the first since 1990.  Concordia has won 43 straight games and has not lost since February 11.  CU broke Shawnee State's (Ohio) mark of 42-consecutive established during the 1996 season.

"It's kind of surreal when you think about it," head coach Crystal Rosenthal said.  "You dream about these types of things and they are really nice accomplishments.  I am most proud of the conference championship, which is a really tough thing to do in this conference.  I am so proud of my team and their commitment to this program."

In game one on Saturday, Katie Cotta started for CU and threw a seven-inning no-hitter, even though she allowed three runs to score with the bases loaded in the sixth inning.  Amanda Fama went two-for-three with two RBI on her two-run homer in the fifth, to go along with a double.  Chanele Dresser also went two-for-three with one RBI.  Alyssa Erickson and Bryana Simpson each had one hit and RBI, and Simpson knocked a triple to right field.

CU got the scoring started in the second, as Simons reached on an error and was replaced by pinch-runnerStephanie Coyne.  Coyne was sacrificed to second and scored on Erickson's RBI single.  Concordia scored again in the fourth as Simpson led off with a triple to right, and scored on Emily Craig's squeeze bunt.

Fama hit a two-run bomb to right center in the fifth after Dresser reached on a single to third base with one out.  Biola made it 4-3 in the sixth inning, as they scored three runs on a strikeout wild pitch, hit by pitch, and walk, all with the bases loaded.  Cotta ended the inning with a strikeout.  CU scored an insurance run in the bottom of the inning as Emily Craig singled up the middle and was replaced by pinch-runner Priscilla Martinez.  Martinez went to third on Ashlee Leon's single, and scored on Dresser's single to first base.

For the second time this season, Katie Cotta tied the CU single-game strikeout record with 15 K's.  She improved to 16-0 on the season and lowered her GSAC-leading 1.29 ERA.  Sarah Enriquez took the loss for Biola and dropped to 8-10.

In the nightcap, Courtney Young pitched a complete-game one-hitter to improve to 10-0 in 2012.  She had three K's and only walked two.  Katie Carson was two-for-four with a solo homer and Amanda Fama knocked a two-run jack in the first.  Jennifer Simons had one hit and three RBI, and Chanele Dresser had two hits for the second-straight game.

Dresser singled with one out in the first, and Fama followed with a two-run blast to right center.  It marked her 25th long ball of the year, best in the nation.  Carson hit a two-out bomb in the second inning over the center field fence to make it 3-0 Eagles.  CU added three more in the fifth, as Carson led off with a single through the right side.  She went to second on a groundout and Fama was intentionally walked.  Jorgenson singled up the middle to score one and Simons singled to right to plate two more.  Concordia loaded the bases with two out, but could not end the game.  Concordia scored one more in the sixth.

Dresser singled to third base, and Fama and Jorgenson were walked.  Simons hit a sac fly to center to make it 7-0 CU.

On the day CU outhit Biola 17-1.  Concordia improved to 50-2 and 14-0 in GSAC.  The 50 wins mark the most in school history.  Biola dropped to 15-25 and 1-11 in conference.  #1 Concordia will honor their eight seniors on Tuesday before the APU doubleheader, and festivities get under way at 1:30 pm at Eagles field.
