Davenport Coach Reaches Milestone

LEBANON, Tenn. - After dropping both games yesterday (March 31), Davenport (Mich.) rebounded in a big way defeating (RV) Cumberland (Tenn.), 4-1 and 6-3. Head coach Ronda Varnesdeel earned her 300th career win in DU's game one victory as the Panthers now sit at 18-10 on the year heading into their conference opener on Tuesday.

The first two innings of game one provided all the scoring for both teams with Cumberland taking an early 1-0 lead after a leadoff homerun. DU responded in the top of the second pushing four runs across behind hits from Paige Sant'Angelo,Debra Burton and Karli Myers.

Senior pitcher Karlee Despres allowed just two hits after the homerun in route to a 4-1 victory for the Panthers and Varnesdeel's 300th career win.

In the nightcap of the doubleheader Davenport took an early 2-0 lead in the third sparked by a double from Kayla Gonyea, walk by Katie Cornman and RBI single from Sant'Angelo.

Cumberland answer in the bottom of the inning with three runs of their own to take the 3-2 lead over DU.

Gonyea led off the fifth inning with her second hit of the game and was later advanced to third on a Sant'Angelo single. Freshman Tami Weber then scored Gonyea from third to tie the game up 3-3.

In the sixth Morgan Greenfield drew a lead-off walk and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ali Dawson.Amber Getty then provided the game winning RBI with a double to right center to give DU the 4-3 lead. The Panthers added two more insurance runs in the seventh and defeated Cumberland 6-3.

Sam Cole picked up the win going seven complete innings allowing two earned runs with four strikeouts. DU racked up eleven hits in the second game and on the day freshman Paige Sant'Angelo was 5-7 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Davenport is now 18-10 on the year and will kick-off WHAC play on Tuesday when they host Aquinas College for a 4:00pm doubleheader.

DU is now 2-0 all-time against Cumberland as these teams met for the first time today...Of Varnesdeel's 301 wins, 133 have come at Davenport with the rest coming when she was a head coach at Aquinas College.
