William Carey (Miss.) Blanks Second-Straight Opponent on Day Two

GULF SHORES, Ala. - Powered by a five-run third-inning, William Carey (52-6) defeated William Woods (Mo.) (30-23), 8-0 in five innings in pool-play action at the 2011 NAIA Softball National Championship Friday. The Lady Crusaders moved to 2-0 in pool play and has out-scored their two opponents 25-0. William Woods falls to 2-0 in Pool C. The event is being held at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.

 

Four of the runs in the third inning for William Carey were via the home run. Judy Barber blasted a three-run bomb and two batters later, Shana Gunter connected for her third homer of the season. The other run by Shayna Turner on a William Woods error. After three innings, the Lady Crusaders led 6-0.

 

William Carey put the game out of reach with two more runs in the fourth frame. Pinch-runner Morgan Stewart scored on a bases-loaded walk and Tan Montgomery crossed home on a fielding error.

 

William Carey pitcher Anna Ard, who notched the win yesterday going three innings, struck out seven in the five-inning victory. She allowed three hits, all singles, and one walk. She improved to 29-2 on the season.

 

MacKenzie Bowden was charged with the loss, falling to 16-12 on the year. She lasted 3.0 innings as she gave up six runs (five earned) on five hits. Courtney Vincent pitched 1.0 inning of relief allowing two runs on one hit.

 

Montgomery led the six-hit parade for William Carey with a 3-for-3 effort. She also scored three times. Barber finished with four RBIs.

 

Audrey Crabtree posted two of the three William Woods hits on the day.

 

William Carey faces Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) in its third and final pool play game Saturday at 5 p.m. CDT. The Owls take on Iowa Wesleyan at Noon Saturday.
