Sandberg Tosses No-Hitter as Cal State San Marcos Takes Down Morningside 5-0 on Day Two

May 20, 2011

GULF SHORES, Ala.(Box Score) Brenna Sandberg twirled the second no-hitter of the 2011 NAIA Softball National Championship to lead California State University-San Marcos (42-9) to a 5-0 victory over Morningside (Iowa) (45-11) on day two of pool play action at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.

Sandberg (38-8) kept the Mustang hitters off balance all day, fanning nine in seven innings and walking three batters in the complete-game shutout victory. Emma Remy (21-4) took the loss for Morningside after giving up three earned runs on four hits in seven innings of action.

The CSU-San Marcos Cougars had only four hits, but were aided by a pair of errors and four walks in the game.

A two-out Morningside error in the second inning led to the Cougars’ first two runs as Heavin-Lee Rodriguez capped the frame with a RBI-double.

While Sandberg cruised, the Cougar bats put the game away with a three-spot after two were out in the top of the seventh inning. Kimi Villalpando started the rally with a two-out walk, while Derrisha Lacey provided the big blow in the inning with a two-run single.

Sandberg retired the first seven hitters she faced before walking a batter with one out in the third. She faced only two batters over the minimum as a 6-3 double play in the fourth erased one of her walks.

Cal State San Marcos will finish pool play with a 4:30 p.m. CDT game against Bethel (Ind.) Saturday, while Morningside will face Asbury (Ky.) at 11:30 am.
