California Baptist No-Hits Friends (Kan.) by a 5-0 Count on Day Two

GULF SHORES, Ala. - (Box Score) California Baptist (61-3) extended its winning streak to eight games with a 5-0 no-hit victory against Friends (Kan.) (34-14) on day two of pool play at the 2011 NAIA Softball National Championship. The 31st annual event is being held at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.

 

Pitchers Emma Holden and Tory Ferreira silenced the Friends' batters for no hits in seven innings of work. Holden improved to 31-1 by tossing 5.0 innings and compiling 11 strikeouts with just one walk. Ferreira notched two strikeouts in the final two innings.

 

The only runner that Friends had on base was in the top of the first inning. Cheyenne Stewart reached on a two-out walk, but was stranded on one of the team's 13 strikeouts that ended the inning.

 

The Lancers put one run on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first frame. Lindsay Henry doubled down the left-field line to score Tina Galinato, who reached on a walk to start the inning.

 

In the fourth, Kendall Gorham led off the inning with a solo home run. Later in the frame, Sloan McHann scored on a wild pitch. California Baptist added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

 

McHann and April Vasquez each had a game-high two hits for the Lancers.

 

Falcons starting pitcher Alyssa Hughes tossed 4.0 innings in the losing effort. She fell to 3-3 as she gave up three runs (two earned) on five hits. She struck out three and walked one.

 

Top-ranked California Baptist, who is 2-0 in pool play, will take on MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) Saturday at 6 p.m. CDT. Holding a 1-1 pool play record, Friends will face SUNY Canton (N.Y.) at 1 p.m.
