Shorter Blanks Notre Dame College 9-0 In Pool Play

GULF SHORES, Ala. – Shorter (Ga.) (45-13) continued the Southern States Athletic Conference’s domination at the 2011 NAIA Softball National Championship by run-ruling Notre Dame (Ohio) (22-21) 9-0 in five innings.
With the victory, the SSAC improves to 7-1 as a conference through two days of pool play action at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.
Libby Munson (26-5) pitched five innings of two-hit, shutout ball for the victory. She struck out six batters and walked none.
The Lady Hawk bats pounded out 14 hits and scored nine runs in support of Munson, with the big innings being a three-run second and five-run fourth.
Jessica Womble finished 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs, Kara Pollock went 3-for-4, Anna Frazee went 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs and Charlsie Broome added a pair of RBIs.
Three-straight two-out singles in the top of the first plated Shorter’s first run, with Brooke Bryan singling home Munson for the 1-0 lead.
After four hits and an error led to a trio of Lady Hawk runs in the 2nd, the bats put the game away with five runs on five hits in the 4th. Bunt singles by Womble and Munson started the inning and Frazee produced a two-run single as the team batted around.
Notre Dame wraps up pool play against Davenport (Mich.) Saturday at 10:30 a.m. CDT, while Shorter finishes with Central Baptist (Ark.) at 3:30 p.m.
