Cal State-San Marcos Comes up with 9-0 Shutout of Asbury (Ky.) on Day One

GULF SHORES, Ala. – California State University-San Marcos (41-9) shut out Asbury (Ky.) (20-12) by a 9-0 score in pool-play action on day one of the NAIA Softball National Championship. The event is being held at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.
Cal State-San Marcos took the early lead in the top of the first with a two-out rally. After the first two hitters struck out, Alex Miller reached on a walk, then stole second. Alyssa Dronenburg singled down the right field line, scoring Miller and advanced to second on the throw. Dronenburg then scored the second run on an Asbury error. The Cougars ended up scoring multiple runs in every inning except the second, taking the five-inning victory.
Cougar pitcher Brenna Sandberg tossed a one-hitter, recording thirteen strikeouts while walking only one batter. She improved to 37-8 on the year.
The loss went to Asbury starter Maris Harreld (10-7), who allowed five hits and four runs (three earned) in 2.1 innings of work.
Three of the first four batters in the Cal State-San Marcos lineup had two hits apiece, with Derrisha Lacey and Alicia Ingram each going 2-for-4. Alyssa Dronenburg was 2-for-2 with two runs, two RBIs and a stolen base.
Miranda Drury had the lone hit for Asbury in the first inning following a hit-by-pitch, but Sandberg struck out the next two hitters to end the inning.
On Friday, Cal State-San Marcos will take on Morningside (Iowa) at 9:00 a.m. CDT and Asbury battles Bethel (Ind.) at 2:00 p.m. in pool-play aciton
