Frazier Ties NAIA Single Season Record With 29th Home Run in Sweep of St. Gregory's

April 12, 2010

LUBBOCK, Texas – After walking eight times in a pair of Sooner Athletic Conference doubleheaders on the weekend, Lubbock Christian University’s Kim Frazier finally saw a pitch she wanted in her final at-bat of a doubleheader sweep of St. Gregory’s University and she connected on her 29th home run of the season to tie a NAIA single-season record.  The homer wrapped up a solid performance by the No.5 Lady Chaparrals, who defeated No.13 St. Gregory’s 7-2 and 11-1 in five innings Saturday afternoon at PlainsCapital Park.

Frazier’s home run was a three-run homer against Lady Cavaliers ace pitcher Sarah Bradley in the third inning of the second game.  The home run ties her with Tracey Mosley (Oklahoma City Univ. – 1995) and Tabitha Foster (Peru State – 2007) for the NAIA single-season record.  The home run also moves her into a share of sixth place on the national collegiate single-season home run list.  The national collegiate record is held by Laura Espinoza (Arizona, NCAA Div. I), who hit 37 in 1995.  Frazier also produced five runs-batted-in on the day, which moves her into third place on the NAIA single-season RBI list.  The RBI record is held by Melissa Dowlen, who produced 99 during the 1994 season.

In the opener, LCU jumped on Bradley early, forcing her out of the game after just three innings pitched.  LCU was able to garner five runs off eight hits off Bradley.  Kayla Van Dieren started the offense for LCU with a two-run double to left field in the second inning.  Amanda Parsons led off the fourth inning with a solo home run off the scoreboard beyond the left field fence.  Van Dieren connected on her second double of the game in the inning to extend the LCU lead to 4-0.  The double led to Bradley being replaced by Nicole Bush, who made her pitching debut of the season.  She faced the bases loaded in the inning and she hit Clarissa Maldonado to extend the LCU lead to 5-0.  Teams traded a run each in the fifth and sixth inning, with LCU’s run in the fifth inning scored on a bases-loaded walk to Kim Frazier and their run in the sixth inning came off a double from Parsons.

Alyssa Gutierrez allowed just two earned runs in seven innings of work for the complete game victory to improve to 26-2 on the season.  Bradley fell to 21-7.  Van Dieren finished the game 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs-batted-in.  Parsons was also 3-for-3 and drove in two runs-batted-in.

The Lady Cavaliers opened the scoring in the second game taking a 1-0 lead with a sacrifice bunt from Autumn Brown to score Tara Nall, who led off the game with a triple.  LCU then went on to score 11 unanswered runs. After walking Frazier in the bottom of the first inning, Bush gave up a two-run home run to Priscilla FaGaines.  Frazier came up to the plate in the second inning with the bases loaded and was walked again to increase the lead to 3-1.  Again, FaGaines made the Lady Cavs pay by producing a two-run single on a chopper that made its way through the left side of the infield.  The Lady Chaps added to the 5-1 lead and put the game out of reach with a six-run third inning.  Amanda Myers hit a double to score Addie Freeman and Jen Frazier singled through the right side resulting in a pair of runs leading up to the three-run homer by Frazier to complete the game’s scoring.

Kim Frazier (1-for-1) and FaGaines (2-for-2) each produced four runs-batted-in during the second game.  Jennifer Frazier was also 2-for-2 from the plate.  Gutierrez pitched the first three innings and gave up one run on one hit for her 27th win of the season.  Jori Rodgers pitched a two-inning save with the game lasting only five innings for her first save of the year.  Bush suffered the loss to drop to 0-1 on the season, as she allowed five runs on four hits in 1 2/3 innings.

The Lady Chaps remain in action on the weekend Sunday, as Frazier will seek her 30th homer of the season in Hobbs, N.M. with the Lady Chaps facing University of the Southwest for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. (CDT).
