ROME, Ga. - Charlsie Broome drove in a run and Elisabeth Barber tossed a complete game gem for her third win of the season as No. 13 Shorter College (Ga.) dropped 12th-ranked Auburn-University Montgomery (Ala.), 2-1, in game two of a Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheader on Thursday at Alto Park.

The Lady Hawks (27-9, 10-6 SSAC) took the opener, 6-3, to secure the sweep and avenge a sweep at the hands of the Lady Senators in Montgomery, Ala., back on March 6. Auburn-Montgomery fell to 25-10-1, 11-4-1 SSAC with the losses.

Shorter raced out to a 1-0 lead in the nightcap as Tiffany Adams singled and later scored on a wild pitch by Auburn-Montgomery starter Brandi Richards.

The Lady Senators tied the game at 1-1 on a Taylor Burt RBI double in the third, but the Lady Hawks responded to retake the lead in the fifth, as Broome's grounder to short skipped by Kacie Ryal, allowing Dandi Ammons to score and put the Lady Hawks up one.

Barber did the rest, working out of a jam in the top of the seventh by forcing a 1-6-3 double play and then inducing a game-ending ground out from Monica Hatcher. Barber, who was making just her sixth appearance on the mound this season, improved to 3-3 on the year. She allowed one run on just four hits.

In game one, Libby Munson went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and Ammons hit a clutch, two-run double as part of a four-run Shorter first to propel the Lady Hawks to the victory.

The Lady Hawks jumped on Auburn-Montgomery starter Danielle Ryan to take command of the opener. Munson ripped an RBI single to center for a 1-0 Shorter edge just three batters into the Lady Hawks' half of the first.

Emily Clements followed with an RBI single and with two out, Ammons laced a double down the left field line - just past a diving Richards - that scored two and staked Shorter a 4-0 lead.

Lady Hawks' starter Jessica Penney surrendered a solo homer to AUM's Shea Driggers in the third, but worked out of trouble throughout the contest. The freshman, who improved to 11-2 on the year, scattered seven hits and fanned five, while only two of the three runs she yielded were earned.

Shorter added some insurance in the bottom of the fourth. Hannah Strength scored on a wild throw following an Adams ground out and Munson registered her second RBI single of contest as the Lady Hawks extended their lead to 6-1.

The Lady Hawks return to SSAC action Friday when they welcome Faulkner University (Ala.) to the Alto Park Softball Complex for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
