Point Loma Nazarene's Addie Sets School Steals and Runs Records

April 17, 2008

San Diego, CA (4/15) - Sea Lion senior Amanda Addie stole three bases in Point Loma Nazarene's 8-0 game one win over Cal State San Marcos on Tuesday at Sunset Cliffs Park, setting a new university record with 171 career steals. Addie also scored three times to eclipse the PLNU runs scored record as well. The Sea Lions won the nightcap 2-0 behind solid pitching and timely hitting from centerfielder Paige Powell

NAIA No. 2 PLNU improved to 35-7 on the year while the No. 21 Cougars fell to 24-14.

The Sea Lions wasted no time getting started, plating five first-inning runs in the opener. Addie notched a steal in that frame, tying her with former star and current Associate Head Coach, Cheryl Schaefer (then Bolding) with 169 for a career.

PLNU starter Tyler Lent helped her own cause with a two-run single in opening frame.

Addie singled with one out in the second inning and promptly stole second base, her career 170th, for a new university and conference record.

"I didn't get a good jump," Addie later said. "When I was running to second I thought I was out."

Designated player Melissa Gomez singled home Addie to increase the PLNU advantage to 6-0. Addie singled and stole second in front of an RBI triple from rightfielder Erica Ricker. Addie's run was the 197th of her career, breaking the previous record held by Schaefer. Ricker scored on a sac fly from Powell in the two-run Sea Lion fourth.

Cal State San Marcos failed to score off Lent in the top of the fifth. The game was then called due to the eight-run mercy rue.

Lent (16-4) allowed just two hits and fanned four en route to the win. She also went 2-for-2 at the plate as did Powell and Addie.

Powell drove in both of Point Loma's runs in a 2-0 game two win, increasing her tally to five for the day. The senior tripled home Ricker in the third and then doubled in shortstop Donie Thomas in the fifth.

Sea Lion started Katie Nagler found herself in trouble but she came through when needed, getting the Cougars to strand six. CSSM left the bases loaded in the first and PLNU first baseman Randi Mead threw out a runner at the plate in the third.

Nagler lasted four innings, yielding three hits and two walks but still picking up her fifth win in as many decisions.

Gomez entered in the top of the fifth and slammed the door for her second save of the year. The junior set down all nine batters she faced.

Addie, the reining GSAC Player of the Week, reached base once in game two but did not attempt a steal. With four regular season games left and then the playoffs, she is only four steals away from setting a new NAIA mark.

The Sea Lions play a twinbill at Concordia this Saturday at noon before closing the regular season with two against Biola on Tuesday.
