Lubbock Christian's First Game in School History Ends With No-Hit Victory

Feb. 14, 2008

Lubbock, Texas (February 13, 2008) - The Lubbock Christian University Lady Chaparrals swept their two-game set with the College of the Southwest Lady Mustangs with Marissa Gonzales pitching a no-hitter in the program's first official game in school history for a 15-0 game-one final, and then rolling in game-two 15-3 aided by an 11-run first inning at Plains Capital Park Wednesday afternoon.

In the opening game, Gonzalez had no problem mowing down CSW hitters, striking out 13 of the 17 batters faced.  Racquel Hawkins led the way offensively for the Lady Chaps by producing five runs-batted-in, including a three-run blast over the left field fence.  Her home run was one of two in the game, as Kelly Griego's shot off the scoreboard in left earlier in the third inning became the first home run recorded in school history. In total, nine LCU players recorded at least one run, hits and run-batted-in during the game.

Ruby Garza suffered the loss in the circle for the Mustangs.  She pitched 2.2 innings, striking out two batters while allowing nine runs and 11 hits.

In game two, the Lady Chaps fell behind 1-0 after the Mustangs scored a run to open the game, but they responded with an 11-run first to take control of the game.  Twelve batters stepped up to the plate in the inning and the Lady Chaps picked up the 11 runs off eight hits and two CSW errors.  LCU went on to pick up a pair of runs in each the second and third innings.  Lisa Stratton was four-for-four from the plate, and Ginalee Davis was three-for-three with a pair of doubles and five runs-batted-in.  Griego picked up the win in game two.  The junior starting pitcher was four outs away from a no-hit performance herself, going 3 2/3 innings before surrendering the first Mustangs hit.  The hit was a two-run home run over the centerfield fence by Bridgette Rodriguez.  Griego struck out eight batters.  Stephanie Ganaway had a rough outing for CSW, as she surrendered eight hits and 11 earned runs in just a third of an inning to take the loss.

Lubbock Christian opens the season 2-0 and they will see the Lady Mustangs again Tuesday in Hobbs, New Mexico for a double-header.
