SCAD defeats Virginia Wise

Meghan Temple, Heather Ellis help Savannah College of Art and Design past University of Virginia's College at Wise 5-2 at NAIA Softball National Championship

DECATUR, Ala. - Meghan Temple and Heather Ellis helped lead the Savannah College of Art and Design past the University of Virginia's College at Wise 5-2 in Pool A action Saturday (May 18) afternoon at the 2007 NAIA Softball National Championship being played at Wilson Morgan Park.

The 15th-ranked Bees improved to 41-7 overall and to 2-1 in pool play while the Cavaliers fell to 32-26 and 0-3. Both teams wrap up their pool play competition today. SCAD will face California Baptist University at 4:30 p.m. while Virginia-Wise will host Dickinson State University at 7 p.m.

Heather Ellis, who went 2-for-3 with a double, gave the Bees a 1-0 lead on her solo home run to left in the bottom of the second. SCAD expanded its lead to 4-0 with three more runs in the fourth inninig. Temple helped herself at the plate with a double to left that scored two runs before she later scored on Andrea Helenthal's single to center.

Virginia-Wise scored two unearned runs in the sixth when Helenthal dropped the apparent final out of the inning. SCAD got its final run in the bottom of the sixth on Cristina Morgado's sacrifice fly.

On the mound, Temple improved to 15-3 as she picked up the complete-game victory with eight strikeouts. Amanda Wheeler Sims (14-12) took the loss for the Cavaliers.
