SALEM, Ore. - Former Portland State pitcher Michelle Hext is the new head softball coach at Corban College (Ore.) announced Director of Athletics John Nelson.

"The leadership and experience Michelle brings to the head coaching position will definitely move the softball program forward," said Nelson.  "She is a quality young lady with the energy and drive that we hope will make Warrior Softball a premier program in the Northwest."

After prepping at Sunset High School in Beaverton, Hext pitched four seasons (2002-06) at NCAA Division I member Portland State University.  In the circle, Hext concluded a stellar career with an overall record of 39-49, including an Earned Run Average of 2.04.

Hext ranks third in program history with 105 appearances, while being amidst the top-10 in games started (83), complete games (60), wins (39), strikeouts (445), innings pitched (567.1), and shutouts (14).  Hext became only the third pitcher in program history to record at least 400 career strikeouts.  The right-hander fanned 18 batters in a 2-1, 10-inning win over the University of San Diego on April 29th, which is three shy of the Portland State single-game record.  The three-time All-Pacific Coast Conference honoree ranks second and third in appearances in a single season (34 in 2004 & 33 in 2006), while sitting in the top-10 in games started (28 in 2006 - tied for 7th) and strikeouts (137 in 2004 - 7th).

Hext also competed at the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) level and was part of four state championship teams (two in Oregon, one in Washington, and one in California).

"I am excited to make a new start and impact at a school that not only wants to make an impact on the field, but also in athletes' lives," said Hext.  "Through athletics I'm looking forward to being able to use my talents to do just that."

Aside from the softball diamond, Hext has been working for the past five years giving private and group pitching lessons to young girls.  Hext, who is single and currently resides in Portland, earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Arts & Letters in 2006 from Portland State University.
