BURNABY, B.C. - Simon Fraser University (B.C.) women's softball shortstop Terra Davenport (Maple Ridge, B.C.) has been named to the 2006 Great Britain National Women's Fastpitch Team. Davenport will participate in the USA World Cup held in Oklahoma City on July 13-17 and then participate in the International Softball Federation World Championships which begin in Beijing, China, on August 27. Davenport will return to the Clan in the fall to complete her senior year at SFU.
"We are all very pleased with the news and wish Terra the best at the up coming World Championships, Terra will no doubt come back in September with a wealth of experience that playing against the best in the world can only bring," said SFU head coach Mike Renney. "Come September I suspect Terra will be geared up to play her senior with (SFU) with a heightened level of confidence that will enhance our entire program."
Davenport is native of Maple Ridge, and was born in Canada. However, by virtue of her mother's birth in England, Davenport was able to apply for and receive British citizenship.
Davenport is one of five SFU student-athletes from the 2006 team currently playing with a national team program, including four SFU student-athletes currently involved with the Canadian National team program. Erin McLean (Whitby, Ont.) and Melanie Matthews (Surrey, B.C.) are playing for the Canadian Senior Women's National Team, while Erin Gee (Burnaby, B.C.) and Rebecca Hartley (Richmond, B.C.) are playing with the Canadian Elite Team. SFU alumni Erin Cumpstone, Rachel Schill and Angela Lichty are teammates of McLean and Matthews on the Senior Women's team.
