Defending Champion Simon Fraser Eliminates OCU

May 23, 2006

DECATUR, Ala. - At the 2006 NAIA Softball National Championship at Wilson Morgan Park in Decatur, Alabama, it was the defending champion Simon Fraser University (B.C.) (32-5) staying alive in the loser's bracket of day three action of this year's tournament when  they defeated Oklahoma City University (53-7) 3-2.

Simon Fraser came back from a 0-1 deficit in the third inning to eliminate the Stars of Oklahoma City.  Melanie Matthews began the one-out rally when she was hit by a pitch.  Erin Gee and Erin McLean both singled to advance the runners.  A combination of good base running by the Clan and an additional single by Becca Hartley, Simon Fraser scored the three runs needed to give them the victory.  McLean led the Clan offensively going 2-for-3 with a run scored and one RBI.  Jennifer Schreyer improved her record to 16-1 on the season allowing one earned run.

Oklahoma City attempted to rally in the top of the seventh inning when Brittani Ellis hit a homerun to deep left center field.  However, the Stars could not manage another hit and ended their run at the 2006 title.   The Stars scattered their three hits among three players and Dasha Shembereva suffered the loss to drop her record to 46-7 on the season.

The Clan of Simon Fraser advance in the loser's bracket to face the loser of the Concordia University (Calif.) (45-17)/Point Loma Nazarene University (Calif.) (45-15) at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday.
