MOBILE, Ala. – [Bracket | Schedule] Round one of the 2024 NAIA Men’s Tennis National Championship wrapped-up from the Mobile Tennis Center on Tuesday afternoon, with five of the eight higher seeds advancing to the second round on Wednesday.


Tuesday’s action saw three upsets, highlighted by historic wins from both (21) Holy Cross (Ind.) and (20) Dillard (La.). Holy Cross managed a 4-2 win over (12) Cumberland (Tenn.) for the program’s first win in tournament history, while Dillard knocked off (13) Union in its first national tournament appearance. Additionally, Grace (Ind.) eliminated (13) University of the Cumberlands with a 4-1 win for the third upset of day one.

 

 

Game Notes & Highlights

  • (11) Xavier (La.) opened the day’s results with a 4-1 victory over the 22nd-seeded Mighty Oaks of Oakland City (Ind.), advancing to face No. 6 Middle Georgia State in the second round.
  • (10) William Woods (Mo.) produced the first shutout of round one, winning 4-0 over (23) Morningside (Iowa). The Owls claimed the doubles point, while grabbing wins from No. 2, 3, and 5 singles to claim the shutout victory.
  • The 15th-seeded Blue Raiders of Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) knocked off (18) McPherson, winning 4-1 in the process. Lindsey Wilson is set to face (2) Tennessee Wesleyan in round two on Wednesday.
  • (9) Reinhardt (Ga.) took care of business and recorded the day’s second and final shutout, handing (24) Ottawa (Kan.) a 4-0 defeat. The Eagles move on to face (8) William Carey (Miss.) in the second round.
  • Holy Cross’ historic upset win over Cumberland came after the Saints earned the doubles point out of the gate. From there, Holy Cross managed wins from No. 1, 3, and 6 singles. (5) Westcliff (Calif.) awaits the Saints in the second round on Wednesday.
  • In the first national tournament match in program history, Dillard sent Union home with a 4-1 victory, earning victories from No. 2, 3, and 4 singles matches after claiming the doubles point to open Tuesday’s matchup. Dillard moves on to face (4) Northwestern Ohio in round two.
  • Grace came up with the third and final upset of round one, defeating Cumberlands (Ky.), 4-1. Grace saw singles victories across the No. 1, 3, and 5 matches, while earning the doubles point over the Patriots.
  • Host-school (16) Mobile (Ala.) came up with the lone 4-3 match win of the day, relying on a three-set thriller from the No. 6 singles match to clinch the match and defeat (17) Coastal Georgia.
