Grizzlies Make it Seven Titles in a Row

MOBILE, Ala. – [BRACKET | SCHEDULE | BOX SCORE] Georgia Gwinnett led wire to wire on Saturday as it captured its seventh NAIA Men’s Tennis National Championship in a row with a 4-1 victory over Keiser (Fla.). With the victory, the Grizzlies have set a new record for consecutive titles, breaking the record of six in a row by former member Lamar Tech (Texas) from 1955-1960.

Georgia Gwinnett (24-0) made its presence felt from the first serve of doubles. The No. 1 team and ITA No. 4-ranked Matthias Haim and Federico Bonacia upset Keiser’s team of Toru Horie and Geronimo Barrios (ITA No. 2-ranked) 6-3.

On the heels of the first win, the Grizzlies took No. 2 doubles to secure the first team point of the match. Luis Gomar and Valentino Caratini combined for a 6-4 win over Keiser’s Fred Oervad and Luke Simkiss.

Matthias Haim earned the first singles victory for the Grizzlies. The freshman from Austria continued a spectacular season with a 6-4, 6-2 win of Toru Horie.

Jose Dugo made it 3-0 for the Grizzlies soon after. The sophomore won his No. 4 court over Fred Oervad 7-5, 6-2.

In a battle of the top two ranked players in the ITA this season, No. 1 Luke Simkiss got the Seahawks on the board at No. 1 singles. The junior earned a 7-5, 6-3 victory over the Grizzlies’ Alex Gurmendi to make it a 2-1 match score. With the victory, Simkiss finished undefeated in singles play in 2021.

Georgia Gwinnett completed its win at No. 3 singles. Luis Gomar defeated Geronimo Barrios 6-4, 6-4 to take the national championship.

After the match, Georgia Gwinnett Head Coach Chase Hodges was named the NAIA Men’s Tennis Coach of the Year for the seventh consecutive time. Additionally, the Grizzlies’ Matthias Haim was named the Ward-Ballinger Outstanding Player. This is the sixth consecutive time the honor has been awarded to a player from the team from Lawrenceville. Jordan Cox was a two-time recipient in both 2015 and 2017.

With the win, Georgia Gwinnett moves sole position of No. 3 overall with seven NAIA National Championship titles. Former member Auburn Montgomery (Ala.) stands alone at No. 2 with nine. Another former member in Redlands (Calif.) is in the top spot with 11.
