Recap of the 2023 NAIA Men's Lacrosse Invitational Quarterfinals

PENSACOLA, Fla. - [SCHEDULE BRACKET] Four teams won their respective quarterfinal game on Wednesday in the NAIA Men’s Lacrosse Invitational quarterfinals.

 


No. 1 Keiser (Fla.) def. No. 8 St. Ambrose (Iowa), 19-7

Keiser (Fla.) netted five goals in each of the final three periods to knock off eighth-seed St. Ambrose (Iowa) 19-7 in the first quarterfinal of the NAIA Men’s Lacrosse Invitational Wednesday afternoon in Pensacola, Fla.  

 

Season Records: Keiser (Fla.) 15-1 | St. Ambrose (Iowa) 9-10

 

Game Highlights

- St. Ambrose struck first as Isaiah Hahn put a well-placed shot into the cage before he connected with Cole Danner to make it 2-0 five minutes into the game. The score remained that way until the 4:17 mark when AJ Badik of Keiser netted an unassisted goal for the Seahawks to cut the Bee's lead to one goal. 

- The Seahawks took advantage of SAU penalties as KU netted two man-up goals as part of a three-goal run to give Keiser a 4-2 lead at the close of the opening period.

- The teams traded goals to open the second quarter before Keiser netted three unanswered goals to take a five-goal advantage for a score of 8-3 with 5:55 remaining in the period. Just over a minute later, Patrick Flynn of St. Ambrose netted a goal for the Bee's four goals in the contest; however, the Seahawks added a goal in the closing seconds of the half to take the 9-4 advantage.

- A St. Ambrose penalty provided an advantage for the Seahawks to open the third quarter as Vincent Cerasoulo of Keiser connected with Badik for a goal just 26 seconds into the period. The two teams traded goals over the next four minutes before Keiser landed another three-goal run to extend their lead to 14-5 at the close of the third quarter.

- Braeden Niemy of Keiser completed a hat trick three minutes into the fourth quarter off an assist from Cole Stassi. After a pair of Seahawks goals, St. Ambrose scored two man-up goals for the 19-7 final.

- For Keiser: AJ Badik led the way for the Seahawks with four goals, while Braeden Niemy, Cole Stassi and Jack Gillen each chipped in hat tricks. Ryan Rundle dished out three assists to go along with four points. Christian Tomei made 16 saves, and Cam Provines went 11-17 on faceoffs with four ground balls.

- For St. Ambrose: Michal Shakerin netted a pair of goals to lead the way for the Bees. Jack Wiltrout scooped five ground balls, while Nolan Hayes made 13 saves between the pipes.   

 

Keiser advances to the semifinals, where the team will face the winner of No. 4 Reinhardt (Ga.) and No. 5 Webber International (Fla.) on Thursday at 4 p.m. CT

 


 

No. 5 Webber International (Fla.) def. No. 4 Reinhardt (Ga.), 13-12 (OT)

Webber International (Fla.) utilized a four-goal second quarter and the golden goal from Christian Tapia for the Warriors upset Reinhardt (Ga.) in overtime of the quarterfinal round in the NAIA Men’s Lacrosse Invitational Wednesday afternoon.  

 

Season Records: Webber International (Fla.) 16-3 | Reinhardt (Ga.) 13-3

 

Game Highlights

- Reinhardt opened the game with a goal in the opening minute as Stefan Duckett connected with Brady Hanak for a goal. Webber responded with back-to-back goals from Christian Tapia and Jeremiah Loo. Reinhardt evened the score before the Warriors added a late goal to take a 3-2 lead after the opening quarter.  

- The two teams traded goals to open the second quarter before Nick Sheaffer and Chase Jackson netted back-to-back goals. A minute later, Cade McCarron of Webber extended the Warriors lead to 7-3. Both teams looked to add to their score before the half; however, a pair of saves by both keepers kept the score the same as the first half closed with a score of 7-3 in favor of Webber.

- Reinhardt won the first two faceoffs of the third quarter and turned them into goals as the Eagles cut the deficit to two goals just over a minute into the second half. The score remained that way until the 8:48 mark when Hanak netted a goal that pulled Reinhardt within a goal. The Eagles evened the score at seven all before Webber netted three of the next four goals to take a 10-8 advantage into the fourth quarter.

- The two teams traded goals at the start of the fourth quarter as Webber took a two goal lead with 4:46 remaining. Reinhardt added two goals in the final minute of the contest, including the game-tying goal from Ethan Lux with 1.8 seconds left which evened the score at 12 and forced overtime.

- Webber won the opening faceoff of overtime and on that possession, Chase Jackson connected with Christian Tapia for the game-winning goal with 3:36 left in overtime for the 13-12 win.

- For Webber: Chase Jackson and Nick Sheaffer both tallied four points to lead the way for the Warriors, while Jeremiah Loo notched a hat trick in the win. Hunter Scott won ten faceoffs and scooped a team-high six ground balls. Alex Cordero made nine saves in the victory.  

- For Reinhardt: JR Sess led the way for the Eagles with three goals and an assist, while Brady Hanak notched two goals and two assists. Ezequel Ceant went 18-28 on faceoff with 12 ground balls as Jason Marx tallied three caused turnovers. Liam Wright made 11 saves between the pipes for the Eagles.

 

Webber International advances to the semifinal round where they will face No. 1 Keiser (Fla.) on Thursday at 4 p.m. CT.

 


No. 3 Cumberlands (Ky.) def. No. 6 Concordia, 14-8

Cumberlands (Ky.) had six players tally multiple points, while goalie Michael Toohey made 20 saves as the Patriots defeated Concordia (Mich.) in the third quarterfinal of the NAIA Men’s Lacrosse Invitational Wednesday afternoon.

 

Season Records: Cumberlands (Ky.) 13-5 | Concordia (Mich.) 15-3

 

Game Highlights

- The two teams traded goals to open the first quarter before Tanner Popovich connected with Evan Barton for a goal to put Cumberlands in front with 2:51 remaining. Concordia evened the score before Popovich found Christian Vanover for a goal with four seconds left in the period to give the Patriots the 4-3 edge.

- Both teams netted a goal in the first five minutes of the second quarter as Cumberlands maintained its lead with a 5-4 advantage. The score remained that way until the 6:55 mark when Maalek Wilson of UC netted a transition goal as the Patriots took a 7-4 lead into the break.

- Noah Sorenson and Travis Wright of Concordia each added a goal for the Cardinals to bring CUAA within a point with 12:27 left in the third quarter. Cumberlands responded with three unanswered goals, including one from Dom Lulow with nine seconds left in the period to make it 10-6. Goalie Michael Toohey of Cumberlands made seven saves for The Patriots in the period.

- The Patriots opened the fourth quarter with three straight goals before each team added a goal in the final minute for the 14-8 final.  

- For Cumberlands: Michael Toohey led the way for the Patriots with 20 saves and two caused turnovers. Tanner Popovich tallied two goals and four assists, while Christian Vanover and Nick Kava combined for nine points in the win.  

- For Concordia: Travis Wright led the way for the Cardinals with four points and Ross Preston dished out three assists. Sam Saje went 23-25 on faceoffs with ten ground balls, while Joseph Loria scooped five ground balls. Sam Bowling made eight saves between the pipes.

 

Cumberlands advances to the semifinal round where they will face the winner of No. 2 Indiana Tech and No. 7 Siena Heights (Mich.) on Thursday at 7 p.m. CT.


 

No. 2 Indiana Tech def. No. 7 Siena Heights (Mich.), 19-6

Indiana Tech netted ten unanswered first-half goals en route to a 19-6 win over Siena Heights (Mich.) in the final quarterfinal game of the NAIA Men’s Lacrosse Invitational Wednesday night.  

 

Season Records: Indiana Tech 16-3 | Siena Heights (Mich.) 9-6

 

Game Highlights

- Indiana Tech won the opening faceoff of the game and on that possession, Devin Macomber netted a goal 38 seconds into the game. Samuel Bodley of Indiana Tech added two goals and an assist to extend the Warriors lead to 4-0 with 4:39 remaining. Indiana Tech added one more goal to take a 5-0 lead at the close of the first quarter.

- The Warriors extended their lead with five consecutive goals in the second quarter. Bodley netted three of the Warriors five goals to give him five goals in the contest as Indiana Tech took a 10-goal lead into halftime.  

- Siena Heights came back from the break firing and won the faceoff en route to the Saints first goal of the contest netted by Alex Lawson. Siena Heights added back-to-back goals to cut the deficit to 10-3 before Indiana Tech scored five of the next six goals to extend their lead to 11 with a score 15-4 at the close of the third quarter.

- Just over a minute into the fourth quarter, Indiana Tech added a goal from Nate Langille to extend the teams lead to 16-4. The score remained that way until midway through the quarter when Connor Roeske of Siena Heights forced a turnover and in the transition, Eric Csizmadia netted a goal for SHU for a score of 16-5. Indiana Tech added three consecutive goals before Siena Heights netted a goal with 29 seconds remaining for the 19-6 final.

- For Indiana Tech: Samuel Bodley led the way for the Warriors with six goals and eight points. Devin Macomber netted four goals in the game and Josh Bramley added a hattrick as Nate Langille finished with four points and six ground balls in the contest. Kyle Twobulls made eight saves in the win.

- For Siena Heights: Jake Gallaher netted a pair of goals for the Saints, while Eric Csizmadia tallied three assists and four points to lead the way for Siena Heights. Fernando Robison went 14-18 on faceoffs with nine ground balls as Rolando Robison scooped five ground balls. Jakob Moske made 13 saves in the game.

 

Indiana Tech advances to the semifinal round where the team will face No. 3 Cumberlands (Ky.) on Thursday at 7 p.m. CT.
