Recap of the 2022 NAIA Men's Lacrosse Invitational Semifinals

Pensacola, Fla. – [Schedule/Results] [Bracket] The championship is set as the two top seeds win their respective semifinal at the 2022 NAIA Men’s Lacrosse Invitational Wednesday at Ashton Brosnaham Park. 

No. 1 Indiana Tech knocked off No. 4 Cumberlands (Ky.) 11-8, while No. 2 Reinhardt (Ga.) defeated No. 6 Aquinas (Mich.) 14-4 to set up a re-match of last year’s championship.

Game Notes/Highlights

No. 1 Indiana Tech def. No. 4 Cumberlands (Ky.) 11-8 (Box Score)

  • #1 Indiana Tech utilized a strong second and third quarter to pull away and defeat #4 Cumberlands 11-8 in the semifinals of the NAIA Invitational.
  • Cumberlands struck first with a goal from Thomas Fogarty four minutes into the game.
  • Indiana Tech added two goals to take a 2-0 lead before the Patriots scored late in the quarter to even the score at 2-2.  Cumberlands goalie Will Settle made six saves in the opening period.
  • Fogarty and Dylan Crouch tallied a goal and an assist to put Cumberlands in front 4-2 midway through the second period.
  • Samuel Bodley netted a man-down goal 38 seconds later to spark a three-goal run for the Warriors giving Indiana Tech a 5-4 advantage at the break. 
  • Andrew Ryan recorded a goal and an assist to open the third quarter extending Indiana Tech’s advantage to 7-4.  The teams traded goals twice over the final five minutes of the period as the Warriors to a 9-6 lead into the fourth quarter.
  • Indiana Tech got goals from Nate Langille and Ryan, while the Patriots added goals from Dawson Coltran and Fogarty in the fourth quarter for the 11-8 final.
  • Leading the way for the Warriors was Bodley and Ryan, who each tallied a hat trick and an assist in the game.  Simeon Bodley notched three caused turnovers and a pair of ground balls, while Blaine Flanigan scooped six ground balls.  Kyle TwoBulls made 11 saves in the game.
  • Fogarty led the way for the Patriots with four goals and an assist, while Settle made 15 saves between the pipes.  Jake Morgan scooped four ground balls as Nik Kubik went 13-23 on faceoffs with six ground balls.
  • Indiana Tech advances to face the winner of #2 Reinhardt and #6 Concordia at 1 p.m. CST Saturday.

 


No. 2 Reinhardt (Ga.) def. No. 6 Aquinas (Mich.) 14-4 (Box Score)

  • An eight-goal second period proved to be the difference as #2 Reinhardt defeated #6 Aquinas 14-4 in the second semifinals of the NAIA Invitational Thursday.  The Eagles advanced to the championship game with the win.
  • Reinhardt struck first as Titus Thind tallied an unassisted goal just over a minute into the game.
  • Aquinas responded with three unanswered goals, including a pair from Mitch Haggart to give the Saints a 3-1 lead after the opening period.
  • The two teams traded goals in the first three minutes of the second quarter to make it 4-2 with 12:41 remaining.
  • From that point, the Eagles scored seven unanswered goals, from six different goal scorers and a pair from Dillan Bousquet to give Reinhardt a 9-4 advantage heading into the break. 
  • Both defenses came out strong in the third quarter as the two teams combined for 15 shots. Clayton Boerigter of Aquinas made four saves in the period. Reinhardt’s Jaxon Nuss netted the lone goal of the period extending the Eagles lead to 10-4.
  • Stafan Duckett netted a pair of goals as part of a four-goal fourth quarter for Reinhardt and the 14-4 final.
  • Liam Wright made 11 saves in the win for Eagles, while three players netted multiple goals in the game.  Bousquet and JR Sess each scooped six ground balls as Sess went 14-20 on faceoffs.
  • Leading the way for Aquinas was Haggart, who finished with a pair of goals.  Clayton Boerighter made 16 saves in the game as Cam Gunn and Alex Rolands each forced two turnovers.
  • Reinhardt advances to the championship against #1 Indiana Tech on Saturday, May 14, at 1 p.m. CST.
