Grace (Ind.) Escapes the NAIA Men's Basketball Round of 16 With Second Half Surge
Kansas City, Mo. - Grace College (Ind.) pulled away from St. Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.) late in the second half, Thursday at Municipal Auditorium and the 2025 NAIA Men's Basketball National Championship, securing a Round of 16 victory with an 86-71 win to advance to Saturday's Quarterfinal round, against Arizona Christian at 1 p.m. The game was wire-to-wire until late, but it was Grace who was able to capitalize on key shots and obtain the big stops defensively down the stretch.
The first half of the game was a tightly contested battle, with the Lancers holding a narrow 39-36 lead at halftime. SMWC stayed within striking distance with solid performances from their starters. Greg Johnson led the charge for St. Mary-Woods, scoring 16 points, while Dameriz Merriweather and Greg Jenkins contributed 14 points each.
In the second half, GC's offensive became more apparent as they outscored St. Mary-Woods 47-35. Ian Raasch was the standout performer for Grace, delivering a stellar performance with 27 points on an impressive 11-13 shooting from the field. Ian Scott also played a crucial role, recording a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds.
Grace's efficient shooting was a key factor in their victory, as they shot 54.7 percent from the field compared to St. Mary-Woods' 39.1. Additionally, Grace excelled at the free-throw line, converting 25 of 30 attempts, matching St. Mary-Woods' 83.3 percent afternoon at the line.
Carter Stoltzfus and Brett Sickafoose were the facilitators for Grace, combining for seven of the Lancers' 15 assists in the game.
Defensively, Grace managed to limit St. Mary-Woods' scoring opportunities, forcing 13 turnovers and outrebounding the Pomeroys 37-27. The win moved Grace to 29-5 going in to Saturday's quarterfinals, and St. Mary-Woods ended its season at 28-6.
