LEWISTON, Idaho – Edwin Martinez and Trent Prokes collected three hits each and Prokes scored a pair of runs, as Cumberlands (Ky.) held off Grand View (Iowa) in an elimination game at the 2025 Avista NAIA World Series, in Lewiston, 8-6.
Hank Himrich did all he could to keep Grand View’s season going, driving in three runs in a 4-for-5 performance at the plate that included a double and a home run. The Patriots, now 49-11, had to overcome four errors, but a quality start by Knicko Billings and JD Price’s 10th save of the year were enough, as Billings improved to 10-4 on the year, striking out four.
Reliever Jacob Draeger (2-3) took the Grand View loss, and Connor Canny scored a game-high two runs for the Vikings.
Max Harper drove in the game’s first run, in the bottom of the first, chopping a ball that was cut off by the second baseman but deep enough on the dirt to plate Christian Thompson.
Evan Borst tied it in the third, dropping a single in to center field to score Canny, and the Vikings looked like they might take a lead a batter later, on Himrich’s second hit of the day. Erik Broekemeier rounded third on the ball to center, but the throw from Derick Andiarena was on time at the plate, keeping the game tied 1-1.
In the bottom of the third, Pedro Vasquez hit a ball hard under the glove of a Grand View infielder, bringing around both Harper and Andiarena, a two-run inning that returned the lead to the Patriots, 3-1.
Himrich collected his first RBIs of the day in the fifth, doubling down the right field line to bring in Canny and Broekemeier, drawing even at 3-3. UC regained the lead in its half, though, when Vasquez flied out to center with Andiarena on third.
The Patriots went up 6-3 in the bottom of the sixth when a pitch up and out of the zone got away for the first run, and a second came home when Thompson flied out, bringing in Caden Petrey.
An infield single and two hit batters loaded the bases for Grand View in the seventh, and Borst hit a long fly ball to foul ground in right, scoring Patrick Bergkamp from third. With two in scoring position, though, UC reliever Nolan Wilson got a fly ball to shallow right with two outs, getting out of a jam to stay in front 6-4.
The Vikings cut another run off the lead to start the eighth, taking advantage of the fourth Cumberlands error in the game, and Broekemeier was hit by a pitch with two outs to load the bases. Wilson got out of the situation, again, this time with a fly ball on the track in left, and in the bottom of the inning, Petrey and Andiarena drove in runs with a single and a sacrifice fly, returning the lead to three runs, 8-5.
Himrich made it interesting in the ninth, homering to dead center to make it 8-6, but Price settled in for Cumberlands to get the save, forcing a pop-up and a strikeout before a final fly ball to advance to Monday.
Grand View ends its season at 38-14, and Cumberlands advances to Monday’s elimination game against either Loyola (La.) or British Columbia. Monday’s game, and all games in the 2025 Avista NAIA World Series, will air on the NAIA Network and Urban Edge Network at www.naia.org/watch.
