Mueller's determination and work ethic caught the attention of scouts, eventually leading him to pursue his college education and athletic career at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas.

During his time as an NAIA athlete, Mueller faced the challenges and demands that come with competing at a collegiate level. The result was rushing for 4,038 yards and scoring 29 touchdowns in four seasons as a Raven. He was first rewarded with a pair of NAIA All-American honors before being drafted into the NFL.

In 1987, the Buffalo Bills selected Mueller in the Third Round as the 78^th overall pick. He played in 57 career games for the Bills with 38 starts. He totaled 901 total yards on 238 attempts and tallied five total touchdowns.

A do-it-all player, Mueller was often the lead blocker in short yardage situations and as a kick returner for Buffalo. He has an 80% block rate and returned six kicks for 93 yards in his career. At the time, Mueller was one of the strongest players in the National Football League with a power-lift triple of 1,865 (700 LB squat, 700 LB deadlift, 465 LB bench).
