NAIA Football Student-Athlete to NFL Head Coach

Mike McCarthy: Some know him as Green Bay Packers Head Coach others know him as Joe Montana’s quarterback coach, National Football League Coach of the Year, Super Bowl champion (XLV). But before any of those outstanding titles he was two-time All-Conference tight end and Captain of the 1986 national runner-up football team. That’s right, prior to his time on the sidelines McCarthy was on the field in Baldwin City, Kansas in a Wildcat uniform.

The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native attended Scottsdale Community College where he was the tight end before transferring to Baker University in 1985. The two year starter for Baker helped the team to two conference championship titles and made one trip to the National Tournament. He graduated in 1987 with a degree in business administration.

After Baker, McCarthy attended Fort Hays State University where he served as a graduate assistant for two seasons before taking a volunteer coaching position at the University of Pittsburgh. After multiple seasons serving as a volunteer, McCarthy accepted his first full time position as a wide receivers coach at the University of Pittsburgh.

McCarthy started his NFL coaching career in 1993 with the Kansas City Chief where he spend the next six years. After a brief stint with Green Bay Packers as quarter back coach, McCarthy served as offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saint and San Francisco 49ers.

It was in 2006 that McCarthy got his first head coaching position with the Green Bay Packers where he stayed until 2018. While at the helm he compiled a record of 125-77-2 with nine playoff appearances, including eight straight playoff appearances from 2009-2016.

At the 101 awards, he attributed a considerable amount of his success to former Baker head coach Charlie Richard, and said he learned how to be a man during his time at Baker.

2020 brings a new adventure for McCarthy and NAIA community is exciting to continue watching him succeed.

Baker University Athletic Director, Nate Houser said. "Seeing a Baker University alumnus lead one of the biggest sports franchises in the world is incredible and we wish Mike all the best on his journey towards another Super Bowl!"
