2024 NAIA Women's Wrestling National Championship - Day One Recap

Jamestown, N.D. – The 2nd Annual NAIA Women’s Wrestling Championship, hosted on the campus of the University of Jamestown inside Harold Newman Arena began Day One of competition on Friday, March 8th. With morning and evening sessions. After two rounds. Menlo (Calif.) and Life (Ga.) have emerged as the teams at the top of the standings.

The 2024 Championship features two days of wrestling, Session I on Friday morning saw the 1st Round (Championship), 1st Round (Consolation), 2nd Round (Championship), and 2nd Round (Consolation) wrestled before the intermission. Friday evening, in Session II, the 3rd Round (Championship Quarterfinals), 3rd Round (Consolation), and 4th Round (Consolation). Click HERE to see the full schedule and results page.        

Session I Highlights:

  • In the 101 bracket, two unseeded wrestlers advanced to the evening session with Riley Banyas of Campbellsville (Ky.) and Zoe Omura of Midland (Neb.)
  • 101 – Top-seeded Erin Hikiji of Providence (Mont.) opened her national tournament run with a fall in 34 seconds. Three-seed Kayla Mckinley-Johnson secured her opening victory of the day with a 10-0 tech fall over Sofia Abramson of Oklahoma City. Fifth-seeded Alyssa Quezaire of Missouri Baptist grabbed a 5-1 decision win of Shanna Morris of Lourdes (Ohio).
  • 109 – Eight-seeded Tristan Nitta of Grand View (Iowa) emerged victorious with a fall over Aynsley Fink of Ottawa (Kan.). Alexsys Jacquez posted a 34-second victory by fall in her first match of the day. Valeria Ahumada of Senia Heights (Mich.) grabbed a win via decision over Rayana Sahagun of Jamestown (N.D.). Three seed, Jasmine Howard of Texas Wesleyan defeated Gracie Elliott of Cumberlands (Ky.) via fall. Second-seeded Alexsys Jacquez secured a win via fall of Judy Sandoval of Grand View (Iowa).
  • 116 – Irma Retano of Eastern Oregon opened her day with a 10-9 decision victory over Markayla Lottie of Avila (Mo.). Second-seeded Avery Ashley of Oklahoma City took care of business in the first round with a 10-0 tech fall over Jamesa Robinson of Brewton Parker (Ga.). Fourth-seeded Katherine Heath of Baker (Kan.) picked up a tech fall victory over Emma Jones of Indiana Tech. Eight-seed Marissa Kurtz of Southern Oregon secured the decision win over Isabelle Asuncion of Providence (Mont.). Six-seed Icart Galumette grabbed a decision over Kaylee Annis of Southern Oregon.
  • 123 – Eight seed Catharine Campbell defeated Cameron Ortiz of Campbellsville (Ky.) by tech fall. Cristelle Rodrigues of Doane (Neb.) secured the win via fall over Trinity Howard of Montreat (N.C.). Six-seed Emily Paulino of Midland (Neb.) defeated Josie Davis of Campbellsville (Ky.) by fall. Fifth seed Anna Krejsa of Life (Ga.) was victorious over Alicia Frank of Providence (Mont.) with a fall. Maya Davis of Grand View (Iowa) picked up the win by fall over Carolina Rios of Texas Wesleyan. Larissa Kaz of Hastings (Neb.) defeated Kaitlin Castro of Cumberlands (Ky.) via fall.
  • 130 – Fifth-seeded Elizabeth Duvall of Texas Wesleyan defeated Erica Grant of Evergreen (Wash.) by fall in 2:27. Top-seeded Carolina Moreno took care of business in her first match of the day, defeating Nonnie Justice of Central Methodist (Mo.) by fall in 2:13. Olivia Messerly of Campbellsville (Ky.) won by fall in 59-seconds against Madeline Santana of Missouri Valley. Second seed Sarah Savidge of Life (Ga.) won by tech fall in her match against Destiny Campbell of Oklahoma City. Fourth-seeded Alyssa Randles of Providence (Mont.) also won via tech fall against Bryce White of Oklahoma City.
  • 136 – Top-seeded Adaugo Nwachukwu of William Penn (Iowa) handled the opposition in her first match of the day with a victory by fall in 28 seconds. Unseeded Stephanie Chaves of Menlo (Calif.) defeated eighth-seeded Gabriella Perez of Campbellsville (Ky.) by decision to remain in the championship bracket. Fourth-seeded Waipullaani Estrella-Beauchamp of Providence (Mont.) secured the tech fall victory of Carley Anderson of Indiana Tech. Willow Barnes of Missouri Valley defeated Piper Hall of Vanguard (Calif.) by tech fall. Zaynah Mcbryde of Life (Ga.) picked up the 11-0 tech fall victory against Keilani Guillermo of Wayland Baptist (Texas). Aileen Lester of Ottawa (Kan.) secured the win by fall over Natalia Posada of Oklahoma City. Samantha Barragan of Menlo (Calif.) won via fall against Aniseta Acosta of Missouri Valley in 2:31. Unseeded Lilly Gough of Central Methodist (Mo.) defeated Sixth-seeded Mattison Parker of Texas Wesleyan by decision. Stephanie Chavez of Menlo (Calif.) defeated eighth-seeded Gabriella Perez of Campbellsville (Ky.) by decision.
  • 143 – Fourth-seeded Desiree Jones of Menlo (Calif.) picked up the decision win over Marissa Jimenez of Oklahoma City. Seventh-seeded Bella Amaro of Southern Oregon secured a victory by fall in 1:26 over Makayla Munoz of Oklahoma City. Latifah McBryde of Life (Ga.) secured the victory by fall over Elisa Falcetti of Missouri Valley in 41 seconds.
  • 155 – All top eight seeds advanced to the championship quarter-finals Friday evening, with Caitlyn Davis of Southern Oregon grabbing a pair of wins Friday morning by tech fall then decision. Sadie Antoque posted a decision win in her only bout of the morning session. Josette Partney of Missouri Baptist and Flor Parker-Borreo of Evergreen (Wash.) both grabbed an injury-default victory. Shannon Workinger of Menlo (Calif.) worked her way into the quarterfinals Friday evening after taking care of business in the Round of 32 and Round of 16.
  • 170 – Only two unseeded wrestlers remain in the championship bracket after the morning session on Friday: Faith Macharia of Missouri Baptist and Aalyah Villarreal of Texas Wesleyan. They both advanced to the quarterfinals Friday night after winning their respective matches by fall. Top seed in the 170 bracket, Abby Mcintyre of Grand View (Iowa) grabbed a pair of wins by fall keeping her All-American hopes alive. Ashley Lekas of William Penn (Iowa) secured a pair of wins via tech fall by a combined score of 20-0 over her two bouts.
  • 191 – Only one unseeded wrestler remains in the championship bracket in the 191 class, as the Cinderella story of Kenisha Jacsaint from Doane (Neb.) continues into the evening session on Friday. Top-seeded Tavia Heidelber-Tillitson of Menlo (Calif.) continues her All-American hopes tonight after posting a win via fall then a second win by tech fall.

Session II Highlights:

  • 101 – Top-seeded Erin Hikiji of Providence (Mont.) continued her dominate performance on Friday evening with a quick 10-0 tech fall over Riley Banyas of Campbellsville (Ky.). Kayla Mckinley-Johnson of Menlo (Calif.) advanced to the semifinals after her victory via injury default. Stefana Jelacic of Lourdes (Ohio) will continue her national title chase after securing the 10-0 tech fall victory. Fourth-seeded Esther Walker of Midland (Neb.) is headed into Saturday after a 3-1 decision victory. Liana Ferreira of Southern Oregon emerged victorious after the upset win over fifth-seeded Alyssa Quezaire. Sixth-seeded Makayla Young of Indiana Tech picked up the 8-1 decision victory over Riley Banyas of Campbellsville (Ky.). Devyn Gomez of Life (Ga.) continues her tournament run into Saturday morning after besting her opponent by fall. Eighth-seeded Audalie Cruz of Wayland Baptist (Texas) advances to Saturday morning via injury default.
  • 109 – No. 1 seed Mia Palumbo of William Penn (Iowa) continued to dominate today, as she posted another tech fall victory pushing her into the semifinals tomorrow. Paige Morales of Providence (Mont.) also earned herself a spot in the semifinals tomorrow after taking down Emma Baertlein of Southern Oregon with a 10-4 decision. Jasmine Howard of Texas Wesleyan and Diana Gonzalez of Life (Ga.) will square off tomorrow after they both picked up decision victories Friday evening. Alexsys Jacquez of St. Mary (Kan.) will continue her run tomorrow morning after picking up a 10-0 tech fall. Tehani Soares of Indiana Tech will continue to battle on Saturday. Tristan Nitta of Grand View (Iowa) secured a place on Saturday morning after a win via fall. Emma Baertlein of Southern Oregon will head to Saturday morning after a 5-2 decision.
  • 116 – Juliana Diaz of Missouri Baptist continues her run as the top seed in the 116 bracket after an 11-0 tech fall over the eight-seeded Marissa Kurtz. Katherine Heath of Baker (Kan.) reached the semifinal round for the first time ever after emerging victorious against the fifth-seeded Ajayzee Zaballos of Menlo (Calif.). Third-seeded Camille Fournier of Texas Wesleyan continued her run Friday evening after a 13-5 decision win over fifth-seeded Icart Galumette. Avery Ashley of Oklahoma City advanced after her tech fall victory over seventh-seeded Ariana Martinez of Life (Ga.). Fifth-seeded Ajayzee Zaballos of Menlo (Calif.) bested her opponent with a 10-0 tech fall. Eighth-seeded Marissa Kurtz of Southern Oregon secured the victory by fall in 1:12 to secure her place Saturday morning. Seventh-seeded Ariana Martinez of Life (Ga.) and sixth-seeded Icart Galumette of Campbellsville (Ky.) both etched their name into the bracket on Saturday morning after they secured victories by fall in their respective bouts.
  • 123 – Cristelle Rodriguez of Doane (Neb.), the top seed in the 123 bracket, pushed her way into the semifinals after she bested Catharine Campbell of Grand View (Iowa). Sophia Smith of Oklahoma City will square off against Rodriguez tomorrow after she picked up the 9-0 decision. Maya Davis of Grand View (Iowa) snagged the 8-4 decision against Emily Paulino of Midland (Neb.). Joanna Vanderwood of William Penn (Iowa) rounded out the 123 semifinal bouts tomorrow after a win by decision. Anna Krejsa of Life (Ga.) and Catharine Campbell of Grand View (Iowa) both continue their tournament runs on Saturday morning after besting their respective opponents by fall. Teammates of Alana Vivas and Haley Narahara of Menlo (Calif.) will meet Saturday morning in the fourth round of consolations. Seeds one through four on the championship side of the 123 bracket advanced into the semifinals tomorrow morning.
  • 130 – Carolina Moreno of Southern Oregon secured the 10-0 tech fall, pushing her into the semifinals. Fourth-seeded Alysaa Randles of Providence (Mont.) was victorious via fall earning her a place in the semifinals. Sixth-seeded Janiah Jones from Missouri Baptist posted the 4-2 decision upset victory over third-seeded Louisa Schwab. Sarah Savidge of Life (Ga.) has a bout tomorrow morning in the semifinals as well after securing the 10-0 tech fall win. Elizabeth Duvall of Texas Wesleyan is headed to the fourth round of consolations Saturday morning after a commanding 15-6 tech fall. Lillian Avalos of Vanguard (Calif.), Devin Patton of William Penn (Iowa), and Louisa Schwab of Menlo (Calif.) all reached the fourth round of consolations Saturday with tech fall victories.
  • 136 – Seeds one through four will continue their national title dreams as top-seeded Adaugo Nwachukwu posted a victory by fall. Her opponent tomorrow is fourth-seeded Waipuilani Estrella-Beauchamp of Providence (Mont.), who advanced thanks to a 9-3 decision. Andrea Schlabach of Grand View (Iowa) advanced via fall over seventh-seeded River Todd of Vanguard (Calif.). Schlabach will face Zaynah McBryde of Life (Ga.), after emerging victorious against Addison Messerly of Campbellsville (Ky.). Tiyahna Askew of Missouri Baptist keeps her tournament run alive after a 2-1 decision. Stephanie Chavez of Menlo (Calif.) and River Todd of Vanguard (Calif.) will continue their battles Saturday morning after they both wrestled to decision victories. Gianna Moreno of Friends (Kan.) wasn’t about to let her tournament run end tonight as she secured a win by fall.
  • 143 – Jamilah McBryde of Life (Ga.) is the only wrestler ranked in the top five to advance to the semifinals tomorrow for the 143 bracket. McBryde advanced after a tech fall victory over Micah Fisher of Cumberlands (Ky.). Madison Diaz of Grand View (Iowa) continues her cinderella story tomorrow in the semifinals, taking down fifth-seeded Alexandra Lopez of Menlo (Calif.) by fall. Emma Walker of Campbellsville (Ky.) and Bella Amaro of Southern Oregon will face off on Saturday after they both claimed decision victories. Alexandra Lopez of Menlo (Calif.) posted a victory by fall to advance into the fourth round of consolations. Reagen Gallaway of Hastings (Neb.) secured the upset tech fall win over eighth-seeded Micah Fisher of Cumberlands (Ky.). Mea Mohler of Texas Wesleyan grabbed the tech fall victory and will face Serenity de La Garza of Missouri Valley.
  • 155 – Caitlyn Davis of Southern Oregon continued to work her way through the championship bracket Friday evening after a 3-1 decision over Sadie Antoque of Providence (Mont.). Flor Parker-Borreo of Evergreen (Wash.) is headed into the next round after defeating fifth-seeded Josette Partney of Missouri Baptist. Liv Wieber of Eastern Oregon posted an upset victory over third-seeded Shannon Workinger of Menlo (Calif.) with a 3-2 decision. Latifah McBryde of Life (Ga.) had an 18-5 tech fall win to push her into the semifinals tomorrow morning. Josette Partney of Missouri Baptist and Sadie Antoque of Providence (Mont.) both advanced to the fourth round of consolations with victories by decision. Kendra Thompson of Campbellsville (Ky.) grabbed the upset victory via fall, while third-seeded Shannon Workinger of Menlo (Calif.) won by a 6-0 decision.
  • 170 – Abby Mclntyre of Grand View (Iowa) will head to the semifinals Saturday morning as the top seed in that bracket with the 4-0 victory over Maggie Graham of Life (Ga.). Kalila Shrive of Menlo (Calif.), a fifth seed continued her title hunt after her win by fall. Shenita Lawson of Southern Oregon won her quarterfinal bout by fall, while second-seeded Ashley Lekas of William Penn (Iowa) recorded the 10-0 tech fall to make a semifinal appearance. Aalyah Villarreal of Texas Wesleyan and sixth-seeded Chamira Cooper of Cumberlands (Ky.) both secured a spot Saturday morning with their victory via fall. Bo Geibe of Seina Heights (Mich.) posted a 15-2 tech fall securing her place in Saturday morning’s bouts.
  • 191 – It’s a battle of the top seeds in the semifinals Saturday morning, as one through four continue their title hunts. Top-seeded Tavia Heidelberg-Tillitson of Menlo (Calif.) picked up the narrow 5-1 decision victory over eight-seeded Olivia Brown of Grand View (Iowa). Fourth-seeded Maquoia Bernabe of Cumberlands (Ky.), third-seeded Lessly Sandoval of St. Mary (Kan.), and second-seeded Joanna Hendricks of Waldorf (Iowa) all secured a spot in the semifinals after besting their respective opponents by fall.  Elisa Robinson of Baker (Kan.) is headed to the fourth round of consolations Saturday morning after a victory via fall. Jannell Avila of Baker (Kan.) and Naomi Duenas of Cumberlands (Ky.) will square off after defeating their opponents by decision. Olivia Brown of Grand View (Iowa) picked up the last win of Friday night by decision as she moves into Saturday morning.
