Grizzlies Capture Fifth-Consecutive NAIA Women’s Tennis National Title

MOBILE, Ala. – [BRACKET | SCHEDULE | BOX SCORE] Georgia Gwinnett overcame a pair of doubles losses to begin the day to earn its fifth-consecutive NAIA National Championship in a 4-2 win over No. 2-seeded Keiser (Fla.). The win elevates the Grizzlies women’s tennis program to No. 2 overall with six national titles.

Keiser (15-2) got the morning off to a great start with the doubles point victory. A day after grabbing wins at No. 2 and No. 3 against Xavier (La.), the Seahawks looked impressive with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 against top-seeded Georgia Gwinnett. Alisha Hussain and Maissane Aik, ranked the No. 4 doubles team in ITA Rankings, grabbed their top court with an upset 7-6 (7-2) win over ITA No. 2-ranked Tereza Koplova and Selina Pichler while Camilla Abatte and Dugleisy Linarez combined for an upset win of their own over ITA No. 5 Maria Genovese and Eva Siska, 7-5.

Armed with a slim, 1-0 lead, the Seahawks looked to continue its momentum in singles, but the defending champs had other ideas. Georgia Gwinnett (23-0) capped-off its undefeated season winning four singles courts to capture the title.

Georgia Gwinnett’s Iryna Lysykh tied the match at one apiece with a win at No. 4 singles over Keiser’s Aik, 6-0 and 6-4, before Keiser regained the lead for the final time.

At No. 3 singles, ITA No. 8-ranked Alisha Hussian defeated ITA No. 6 Selina Pichler of Georgia Gwinnett, 6-3 and 6-2. This was, however, the final win of the match for the Seahawks.

Maria Genovese tied the match at two apiece with her win for the Grizzlies at No. 1, 6-2 and 6-2 before Marta Maestro gave Georgia Gwinnett the lead for good. At No. 6, the freshman from Madrid, Spain defeated Lisa Khamassi of Keiser 6-3, 7-5.

The Grizzlies took the final victory needed at No. 5 as Alejandra Ferrer Rod defeated Isabella Perez in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 to grab the red banner.

After the match, Georgia Gwinnett Head Coach Chase Hodges was named the NAIA Women’s Tennis Coach of the Year for the fifth consecutive time. Additionally, the Grizzlies’ Iryna Lysykh was named the Marvin P. Richmond Outstanding Player. This is the fifth consecutive time the honor has been bestowed on a player from the team from Lawrenceville. Valeria Podda was the recipient in both 2016 and 2017 while Madeline Bosnjak won a pair of her own in 2018 and 2019.

With the win, Georgia Gwinnett moves to No. 2 overall with six NAIA National Championship titles. Former member Auburn Montgomery (Ala.) leads all-time with 14.
