Day 1 of the 2022 NAIA Men's Volleyball Championship

DES MOINES, Iowa - [Bracket | Schedule/Results | Live Stream] Georgetown (Ky.), Ottawa (Ariz.), Campbellsville (Ky.) and Grand View (Iowa) won the first matches in their respective pools during the pool play round on the first day of the NAIA Men's Volleyball Championship in Des Moines, Iowa. 


Georgetown (Ky.) def. Indiana Tech, 3-2 BOX SCORE

 

Georgetown (Ky.) was down two sets to none but after landing set three 25-23, the Tigers did not allow Indiana Tech to lead for the remaining two sets. 

Game Highlights

  • Georgetown held Indiana Tech to -.172 hitting percentage in set four and 0 hitting percentage in set four.
  • Georgetown posted an impressive 0.467 team hitting percentage in set five on no errors and seven kills on 15 attempts.
  • Ryan Gunn of Georgetown led all attackers with 21 kills. And a 0.326 attack percentage. Gunn was closely followed by teammate Krzystztoff Kowalski with 20 kills.
  • Tyree Wesley of Georgetown posted an 0.750 attack percentage with six kills on eight attempts and no errors.

Ottawa (Ariz.) def. Saint Xavier (Ill.), 3-0 BOX SCORE

 

Ottawa (Ariz.) swept Saint Xavier (Ill.) in straight sets. The Spirit closed out each set with a run within the final eight points. 

Game Highlights

  • The Spirit made a late 8-3 run in set 1 to close out the win
  • Tied at 20 all in set two, Ottawa went on a 6-4 run to just outlast the Cougars for the second set win
  • SXU tied things us at 20 all again in the final set but Ottawa again with a 5-1 run sparked by Quaid King would land the Spirit the match.
  • Jordan Moses of Ottawa led all scorers with 16 kills.
  • Tyler Gardenhire of Ottawa fed the offense and posted 31 assists in the match.

Campbellsville (Ky.) def. Vanguard (Calif.), 3-1 BOX SCORE

 

Vanguard (Calif.) started off in control and took the set 1 win. Campbellsville (Ky.) settled in and finished out the next three sets to win the match.

Game Highlights

  • The Vanguard Lions were down early in set one but after an eight point run the Lions created a six point scoring gap that Campbellsville was unable to close.
  • The Tigers opened up a 5-1 lead in set two and maintained that lead through the entirety of the second set.
  • Campbellsville took an early lead but the Lions fought their way back into the game tying the score twice and taking the lead once. The Tigers however answered with a 6-1 run that would give them the lead again. Campbellsville held that lead to close out the set and give them a two set lead to Vanguards one.
  • The Tigers opened set four with a 6-2 lead and would hold Vanguard at bay to close out the match 3-1.
  • Matthew Roussin of Vanguard led all scorers with 16 kills in the match.
  • Campbellsville led a balanced offense with four players posting double digit kills: Ho Yin Leung (11), Jason Camacho (12), Eric Heller (10) and Niklas Held (11)
  • Ryan Smith of Campbellsville posted 44 total assists on the night for an average of 11 assists per set.

Grand View (Iowa) def. Aquinas (Mich.), 3-0 BOX SCORE

Grand View (Iowa) extended its win streak to six matches with a sweep of Aquinas on the first day of the NAIA Men’s Volleyball Championship.

Game Highlights

  • The teams played each other close at the start of the first set until Grand View went on an 8-3 run to create a scoring gap that they would see through to a set one win.
  • Aquinas boasted a narrow lead at the beginning of set one until a kill by Leonardo Annuchini of Grand View sparked an 11-3 run that would give the Vikings a commanding lead to take set two.
  • GVU started set three at 6-1 but the Saints closed the scoring gap to as much as two points but with a service error from the Saints, a GVU block and an ace off the hand of Kelsey Yogi of Grand View, the Vikings would close out the set 25-20 for a 3-0 match win.
  •  Julian Armendano of Aquinas led all scorers with 15 kills on the night.
  • Bayron Valdez of Grand View led the Vikings with 10 points.
  • Francisco Arredondo directed the Vikings offense with 35 assists for an average of 11.6
