MARION, Ind. – (Team Results) (Individual Results) Indiana Tech leaves the 2013 NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships with both the men’s and women’s team titles. Indiana Tech earned the sweep, hosted by Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Indiana.

The team championships for Indiana Tech are the first for each program. Warriors head coach Doug Edgar was honored as the Men’s and Women’s Coach of the Year for leading both teams to the title.

Indiana Tech captured the men’s championship by a 72-68 margin over Oklahoma Baptist. Indiana Tech led Oklahoma Baptist by just two points as the 4x400-Meter Relay approached. Indiana Tech held off Oklahoma Baptist by 0.43 seconds for second place in the relay to withstand the runner-up. The Indiana Tech women did not have to wait until the last race as they earned a 122-82.75 victory over Oklahoma Baptist. The runner-up finish for Oklahoma Baptist is their fourth in the past five years.

Indiana Tech received more hardware after the tournament concluded as Adella King was chosen as the Women’s Outstanding Performer by the Games Committee. Akela Jones of Oklahoma Baptist won the Women’s Most Valuable Player, which is a point-based award. On the men’s side, Nathan Martin of Spring Arbor (Mich.) was chosen as the Men’s Outstanding Performer and Willie Irwin of Concordia (Ore.) was tagged as the Men’s Most Valuable Player.

The Indiana Tech women claimed six individual/relay championships on Saturday to secure the large victory. King won the 100-Meter and 200-Meter races in addition to being a part of the winning 4x100-Meter Relay team. Kirsten Flake earned the 400-Meter victory, Zalika Dixon was first in the 400-Meter Hurdles, and the 4x400-Meter Relay capped the weekend with a championship.

Jones paced Oklahoma Baptist with two more individual titles on Saturday to go along with her Long Jump championship on Thursday. Jones won the High Jump early in the afternoon, and later in the day, won her third title with a victory in the 100-Meter Hurdles.

Gabriella Dixson of Concordia (Ore.) became a double champion in 2013 with a win in the Women’s Discus. She also won the Shot Put on Friday. Karlee Coffey of Eastern Oregon also won two titles this weekend as she won the 5,000-Meter today to go along with her 10,000-Meter win on Thursday. Monika Kalicinska of St. Gregory’s (Okla.) won the Women’s Marathon to begin the morning at 6 a.m. Her winning time of 2:50:52 is the first individual championship for St. Gregory’s.

Also winning individual women’s championships on Saturday were:  Sora Klopfenstein of College of Idaho in the 3,000-Meter Steeplechase, Hillary Holt of College of Idaho in the 1,500-Meter, and Hanna Helker of Oklahoma Baptist in the 800-Meter.

One men’s championship record was shattered today which came bright and early in the morning during the marathon. Nathan Martin easily won the 26.2-mile race in a time of 2:19:18. That time was 1:50 faster than the previous record, which was set 28 years ago in 1985. The victory was the second this weekend for Martin who won the 10,000-Meter on Thursday night. Martin becomes just the second individual to win the 10,000-Meter and Marathon at the same NAIA championship.

Wayland Baptist (Texas) won the final race of the week in the Men’s 4x400-Meter Relay as they defended their title from 2012. Cedrique Smith of Sterling (Kan.) also won a national championship for the second-straight year as he won the Men’s 100-Meter Hurdles.

Irwin continued the dominance of throwing events for Concordia (Ore.). After winning the Men’s Discus on Friday, Irwin gained another championship in the Men’s Shot Put on Saturday.

Other men’s championships determined on Saturday were:  Easton Padden of Carroll (Mont.) in the Pole Vault, Augustus Cowan of Briar Cliff (Iowa) in the Triple Jump, Isaac Updike of Eastern Oregon in the 3,000-Meter Steeplechase, Indiana Tech in the 4x100-Meter Relay, Luc Bruchet of British Columbia in the 1,500-Meter, Albert Huntley of Cumberlands (Ky.) in the 100-Meter, Sheldon Williams of Southern-New Orleans (La.) in the 400-Meter Hurdles, Clay Sheperson of Oklahoma Baptist in the 800-Meter, Gregory Turner of Wayland Baptist in the 200-Meter, and John Gilbertson of The Master’s (Calif.) in the 5,000-Meter.

Indiana Wesleyan University was the host site for the 2013 NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championship. It marked the fourth-consecutive year that the national meet was held in Marion, Indiana.
