2023 NAIA Football Championship Series First Round Preview

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – [FCS Schedule] The NAIA Football Championship Series begins on Saturday, November 18th at four campus host sites across the country. The Top 12 seeds receive a first round bye. 

The full field features 13 automatic qualifiers and seven at-large berths. In order to qualify for an automatic bid, teams must win their conference regular season or division title. At-large berths were determined by the NAIA Football National Selection Committee. Teams earning an at-large berth must be ranked in the Top 25 of the final NAIA Coaches' Top 25 poll.

The 68th Annual NAIA Football National Championship will culminate on December 18th at Durham County Memorial Stadium in Durham, N.C. For more information on the 2023 NAIA Football National Championship, click here.

 

St. Thomas (Fla.) 8-3 vs. Reinhardt (Ga.) 8-2

  • This season marks the first FCS appearance in Bobcat program history
  • The Eagles are playing in the postseason for the ninth straight season 
  • Reinhardt snagged their place by winning the Appalachian Athletic Conference
  • STU is in the mix as an at-large out of The Sun Conference
  • The Bobcats are second in the country in scoring at 46.6 points per game
  • Reinhardt is second in the NAIA at 17.9 pass yards per completion

Montana Tech 7-3 vs. Dickinson State (N.D.) 9-1

  • The Diggers are back into the postseason after a seven year hiatus
  • Meanwhile, the Blue Hawks are playing in the FCS for the ninth year in a row
  • DSU claimed their spot by once again winning the North Star Athletic Association
  • Tech earned an at-large berth from the Frontier Conference
  • Dickinson State is fourth in the nation in red zone touchdown conversion rate (76%)
  • Montana Tech's Andrew Almos is the national leader in average yards per punt - 45.7

Dordt (Iowa) 8-2 vs. Ottawa (Kan.) 6-5

  • Dordt grabbed one of the seven at-large berths out of the Great Plains Athletic Conference
  • The Braves booked their post season ticket by claiming the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference - Bissell Division crown
  • This marks the second ever appearance by the Defenders in the Football postseason
  • Ottawa is playing for the first time since 2014
  • Dordt is third in rushing yards per game with 246.1
  • OU has 800 total tackles this season, third amongst NAIA teams

Baker (Kan.) 8-2 vs. Louisiana Christian 9-1

  • The Baker Wildcats earned their spot in the FCS as the Heart of America South Division Champion
  • The LCU Wildcats are playing in their first NAIA postseason game in program history
  • After a two year gap, Baker is making their 20th appearance
  • Louisiana Christian earned the AQ from the Sooner Athletic Conference
  • Baker posted 22 defensive interceptions, which puts them second nationally
  • LCU is second in the country with 2,821 total rushing yards
