Review of the 2023 NAIA Football Championship Series Quarterfinals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – [FCS Schedule] The NAIA Football Championship Series continues on Saturday, December 2nd at four campus sites across the country. The Quarterfinals saw three of the four home teams advance to next weekend's Semifinal action. Matchups for the Semifinal Round can be found HERE.

No. 1 Northwestern (Iowa) def. No. 12 Saint Xavier (Ill.), 34-17

  • The Red Raiders continued their winning streak today with yet another victory.
  • NWC ran for 174 yards in the game, then threw for another 217 yards.
  • Jalyn Gramstad was 14-for-18 on passing attempts with a pair of touchdowns.
  • Austyn Gerard recorded the two receiving touchdowns as those were his only two catches of the day.
  • Konner McQuillan led the Red Raider rushing crew with 99 yards and one touchdown, while Gramstad rushed one in on his own.
  • For SXU, Stuart Ross threw for 183 yards with one passing touchdown as he completed 23-of-38 passing attempts.
  • Justin Pringle ran for 79 yards on nine carries for the Cougars with a single touchdown.

 

No. 11 College of Idaho def. No. 2 Grand View (Iowa), 31-17

  • The College of Idaho Coyotes pulled off the upset in Des Moines, Iowa today taking down second seeded Grand View (Iowa).
  • C of I posted 21 first down in the game where they had a 46% third down efficiency and a 67% fourth down efficiency.
  • Grand View (Iowa) had more total first downs with 26, but posted just a 31% third down efficiency and were 1-for-2 on fourth down.
  • The Coyotes needed just 63 plays to rack up the 396 total yards of offense in this game with 225 of those yards through the air and 171 rushing yards.
  • The Vikings tallied three sacks on the Coyotes quarterback for a loss of 34 yards.
  • Andy Peters for C of I was 21-of-29 passing for 225 yards; Peters also led the rushing effort with 77 yards on 16 attempts.
  • Jon Schofield had eight receptions in the game for 104 yards with a long of 40
  • Defensivley, Chase Brown had one interception, which he then turned into a pick-six after returning it 95 yards.
  • Brown's pick-six was recorded as the second longest in Coyotes football history.
  • College of Idaho continued to be dominate in the third quarter over the last 12 games out-scoring opponents 154-49.


No. 3 Keiser (Fla.) def. No. 7 Bethel (Tenn.), 56-14

  • The third seeded Seahawks were dominate on the ground both offensively and defensively as KU ran for 267 yards, while the defense held Bethel (Tenn.) to only 75 yards rushing.
  • Andrew Burnette led the rushing game for Keiser (Fla.) with 134 yards on 24 rushing attempts, while also adding a trio of touchdowns.
  • Louis Averhart had the only receiving touchdown for the Seahawks in the game.
  • Bryce Veasley completed 76.9% of his passing attempts in the game for 135 yards.
  • Avont Burrus tallied three receptions for 104 yards to lead the Wildcats; J.D. Dixon was close behind with four receptions for 100 yards and two touchdowns.
  • Darrien Lewis of Bethel (Tenn.) recorded 10 tackles to lead all defensive players.
  • Wendol Philord, Trevon Cooper, and Jertavis Black all tallied one sack for the Seahawks in the victory.


No. 4 Georgetown (Ky.) def. No. 6 Indiana Wesleyan, 31-21

  • The Tigers were pretty balanced with 126 passing yards and 157 rushing yards.
  • IWU, on the other hand, only rushed for eight yards of their 248 total offense.
  • Gehrig Slunaker was 15-of-22 on passing attempts as he threw for a combined 126 yards and one touchdown.
  • Xander Stokes, for the Wildcats, was 21-of-35 through the air with 240 yards and one touchdown.
  • Georgetown's defense was relentless on the Wildcats, posting four sacks for a loss of 39 yards and a pair of interceptions that were returned for a combined 76 yards.
  • Luke Bays led all players in the game with 16 total tackles; Davon Starks had both interceptions for the Tigers defense.
