The FARA 15

  1. How did you become an FAR?
A Chemistry Professor at Georgetown was FAR for many years and he asked me if I would like to become FAR after he retired.  I overheard him meeting with transfer students and I liked the thought of being part of the athletic experience.

  1. What is your favorite part of being an FAR?
The fact that I certify all of the student-athletes and keeping up with the athletic programs.

  1. What is the biggest challenge of your job?
50-60% of our students are athletes!  Some weeks can get a bit jam-packed, especially in the Fall semester.

  1. If you could go back to your first day as an FAR, what would you tell yourself?
Keep detailed records as you work through each academic year. Timing is everything!

  1. What is your favorite show/movie?
Star Wars (the “original,” Episode IV: A New Hope in 1977).  Nothing else like it at the time it came out; it revolutionized Sci-Fi movies and really all other movies in terms of special effects/sound.

  1. What has been the highlight of your time as an FAR?
When a team that we thought would have a tough time just making it through the season won the national championship.

  1. What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?
“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might” -Ecclesiastes 9:10a

  1. What can you not live without?
My faith in Christ and my family.

  1. Who are your favorite teams (other than your school’s of course)?
    Cincinnati Reds and Kentucky Wildcats

  1. Who was your most memorable or inspiring student that you have worked with and why?
One of our student-athletes became part of our church family and we are good friends even years after graduation.

  1. How does your school approach certifying students in the ECP software?
We have a compliance officer who does all of the initial data entry and then I check every piece of information.  Having two sets of eyes go through everything (along with the others in the process), has worked out great. We all make a great team!

  1. What do you like to do in your free time?
Play the drums (in bands, chorus concerts, and musicals), play golf, and root on the Kentucky Wildcats.

  1. If you have a question related to your position as FAR, who do you contact?
Our compliance officer, the Conference Chair, or the NAIA Office

  1. Do you have any pets? Yes, a tabby cat named Jade.  She is named for her beautiful green eyes. I never thought I would get so close to a pet but she is basically family now.

  1. How do you navigate being a part of two different departments on campus?
Being at a small college, communication is very easy and the new electronic format for the eligibility paperwork makes that process much more streamlined. I can’t say enough good things about our compliance officer who keeps in very close contact with everyone involved.
