The FARA 15

  1. How did you become an FAR? My second year at Corban the AD stopped in my office and said “Bryce you show up at a lot of games, we would like you to be FAR.  You just have a sign some paperwork every semester”.
  1. What is your favorite part of being an FAR? Building relationships with students and coaches.  Being part of setting the direction for athletics.
  1. What is the biggest challenge of your job?  Time management.  Making time to do more than just cranking out eligibility.
  1. If you could go back to your first day as an FAR, what would you tell yourself? Don’t commit to too many other things on campus.
  1. What is your favorite show/movie? Favorite Movie – “The Accountant”
  1. What has been the highlight of your time as an FAR?  The relationships with student athletes and coaches.  Getting involved at the National level within the NAIA.  Serving on various committees and most recently on NEC.
  1. What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?  As a teenager I passed my future Father-in-Law as he was headed off to work and said “don’t work to hard today”.  He stopped in his tracks and explained the error in my thinking.  He passed on this advice, that my employer and my God deserve my best everyday.
  1. What can you not live without?  Coffee, Golf and my Bible.
  1. Who are your favorite teams (other than your school’s of course)?  Seattle Mariners (although I have no idea what they are up to this week) and the San Francisco Giants.
  1. Who was your most memorable or inspiring student that you have worked with and why? Two former students standout from the FAR side of my life in academics.
      1. Cassie Terry (Steed) Women’s Basketball and Volleyball, Pre-med major.  A Veterinarian today.  She was an outstanding athlete and student who was one of the first through our new pre-med degree program.  She blazed a trail and contributed significantly to the new program.  She didn’t see anything as an obstacle, just an opportunity and challenge.
      2. Kellen Luey, Men’s Soccer, Duer award winner, Accounting Major.  Kellen is finishing law school this spring.  He was such a tremendous quiet leader on campus as a student.  The hours we spent chatting about life, graduate school and careers are what make teaching special.  He continues to come back every year to encourage the new soccer teams in their pursuits on and off the field.
  1. How does your school approach certifying students in the ECP software?  We are fortunate to have good system in place for the processing of eligibility on our campus.  Most of the time our assistant AD does the initial input and then the Registrar and FAR review and make changes in the system as necessary.  If necessary, which happens often, the registrar or the FAR will do the initial input because of time constraints.  Either way all three of us are reviewing the students transcripts in the process.
  1. What do you like to do in your free time?  Whats that ?  I’m a chronic remodeler so projects around the house always fill up my free time.
  1. If you have a question related to your position as FAR, who do you contact?  Mickie Bush has been my goto for 31 years.  Brenda White and Chesney Sallee come in a close second.
  1. Do you have any pets? Just the family of Deer that graze on our property daily.
  2. How do you navigate being a part of two different departments on campus?   For many years it wasn’t too hard, but as we have grown and number of athletes has grown it has  difficult.  It’s forced me to be more intentional about scheduling time to work on eligibility and meet with coaches.
