Semifinal Saturday Takes Shape in National Championship Quarters

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. – [Final Site Schedule] [Bracket] Day two of action lived up to the hype as the semifinal round matchups are now set in the 2021 NAIA Women’s Soccer National Championship. Central Methodist (Mo.) jumped out on the defending national champs early and held-on to a 2-0 win, while the No. 10-seeded Oregon Tech took-down perennial powerhouse and No. 2-seeded Spring Arbor (Mich.), 1-0. Top-seeded William Carey (Miss.) punched its ticket with a win over Westmont (Calif.) while the NAIA’s top scoring team, Tennessee Southern, got a 4-0 win to return to the pitch on Saturday.

 

GAME NOTES/HIGHLIGHTS

No. 4 Central Methodist (Mo.) def. No. 5 Keiser (Fla.) 2-0

  • Central Methodist capitalized on its first chance in the second minute as Roneisha Frank scored her 12th goal of the season to give her team a 1-0 lead.
  • Andrea Villar extended the lead in the 22nd minute, assisted by Frank, to make it 2-0 Eagles. It was the 29th tally of the year for the senior
  • Max De Armas Colombo recorded the shutout in the match. It was her third clean sheet playing in a full 90 minutes this season.
  • Central Methodist’s win was its first in team history at the final site.

 

No. 1 William Carey (Miss.) def. No. 9 Westmont (Calif.) 3-1

  • William Carey (Miss.) began the scoring in the 14th minute. Kauany Sousa netted her sixth goal of the year to put the No. 1 team in the nation up 1-0.
  • Kaylie Agostine posted the second score of the match in the 34th minute to send the Crusaders into halftime up 2-0. The goal was the senior’s second of the season.
  • In the second half, William Carey extended its lead further. Maria Corral Pinon recorded her fifth goal of the season to give her team a 3-0 lead.
  • Grace Duckens put Westmont on the board in the 86th minute. It was the junior’s 11th on the season.
  • William Carey advances to semifinal round for fifth consecutive season.

 

 

No. 10 Oregon Tech def. No. 2 Spring Arbor (Mich.) 1-0

  • After a scoreless first half, Oregon Tech took the lead in the 60th minute on a goal from Amanda Seward. The junior netted her third goal of the season.
  • Alyx Burkhartzmeyer recorded her second consecutive shutout in final site play.
  • Oregon Tech is now 2-0 in final site play all-time.
  • Combined in the match, there were just five shots on goal between the teams.

 

No. 3 Tennessee Southern def. No. 6 Marian (Ind.) 4-0

  • The high-scoring Firehawks wasted little time getting on the board. Yuki Watari scored the match’s first goal in the fifth minute to give her squad a 1-0 lead. The score was the 15th of the season for the junior.
  • In the 30th minute, the Firehawks extended the lead to 2-0. Estelle Badoedana Ekada found the back of the net after a perfect ball through the middle from Adisa Amang to make it 2-0.
  • NAIA goals leader Keito Ido got in on the action in the 33rd minute from point blank range, her 36th of the year, to give Tennessee Southern a 3-0 lead.
  • Ido did it again in the second half. In the 59th minute, she netted her second of the match, her 37th of the season, to give the Firehawks a 4-0 lead.
  • In the 80th minute, Yuki Watari was awarded a penalty shot, but missed wide in a bid for her 16th goal of the season.
