Seahawks Find Overtime Magic in National Title Match

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – [Box Score] [Bracket] After 90 minutes of tense game action, Keiser (Fla.) got the one touch that it needed. Matilda Ovenberger found the back of the net with a touch off a cross from Maja Henriksson to seal the deal and secure the second-consecutive national title for the Seahawks in a 2-1 overtime win.

Keiser (Fla.) had the first major opportunity in the match after a foul on a trip inside the box put Matilda Ovenberger at the dot for a penalty kick. It was William Carey keeper Sabrina Lang, however, that came up big with a save to keep the score tied at zero.

The Seahawks followed with another big opportunity in the 23rd minute as Maja Henriksson played a cross into the box for Larissa Weber, but the header went just high.

Though Keiser had the bulk of the early quality chances, it was William Carey that found the back of the net first. Ana Paula Santos capitalized on a chance with an out of position keeper and a wide open net to give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead with 12:23 remaining in the opening half.

In the 41st minute, Keiser tied the score. On a corner kick by Henriksson, Emma Holmskov was able to tip the ball past Lang, her 10th goal of the season, to make it 1-1.

It would take just over 94 minutes, however, to determine a winner. Henriksson dribbled off the left side and sent a cross into the box where Ovenberger was waiting to finish for the Seahawks.

With the win, Keiser becomes the first team since former member Lee (Tenn.) to win back-to-back national titles. Lee won four consecutive from 2008-2011. Keiser is now 1-1 against William Carey in a national title match. The Crusaders were victorious in the first matchup in 2018 in Orange Beach, Ala.

After the match, the 2020 NAIA Women’s Soccer National Championship All Tournament Team was announced.
