2024 NAIA Women's Lacrosse National Championship Quarterfinal Recap

Savannah, Ga. – [Final Site Schedule] [Bracket] The 2024 NAIA Women’s Lacrosse National Championship got underway today at Memorial Stadium in Savannah, Ga. with four quarterfinal games being played. All higher seeds advanced to the semifinals tomorrow evening at Memorial Stadium in Savannah, Ga. 

 

GAME NOTES/HIGHLIGHTS 

No. 1 Reinhardt (Ga.) def. No. 8 Missouri Baptist, 10-17  

  • Reinhardt (Ga.) looked to strike early in the opening game of the 2024 NAIA Women’s Lacrosse Championship, having a strong offensive presence right away. After four shots on goal, Jillian Mello found the back of the net to open the scoring with 10:23 to play in the first. 

  • After a yellow card on the Spartans, the free position shot attempt goes wide, but the Eagles clean up and found the back of the net once again as Mello buried her second of the game and 43rdof the season to lead 2-0. 

  • With 8:26 to play in the first Mello collected her third goal of the game for the first-quarter hat trick to put RU ahead 3-0 and Missouri Baptist called for a timeout. 

  • The Eagles' defense held strong after the timeout forcing a shot clock violation from the Spartans, which they turned into a goal shortly after on as Shelby O’Neil picked up her 40th of the season. 

  • With 4:28 left to play in the first quarter, Missouri Baptist gets on the board with their first goal of the game by Lydia Cornett, her 66th of the season, the Spartans followed it up with another shot and goal from Mackaylee Miller to cut the deficit to 2. 

  • The game continues to go back and forth in the later part of the opening quarter and Macy Fulton split two defenders cashing in on her seventh goal of the season. 

  • The Spartans won the draw control then Natalie Patrick collected on her 18th goal of the 2024 season, keeping the margin at two, 5-3. 

  • After one quarter of play, the top-seeded Eagles lead eighth-seeded Missouri Baptist in shots (10-7) and shots on goal (8-5), but the Spartans lead in draw controls (5-4) and are a perfect 2-for-2 on clears. 

  • Nearly two minutes into the second quarter, the Spartans struck again as Miller picked up her 39thof the season tightening the margin to 4-5 against the top-seeded Eagles. 

  • Shelby O’Neil would push the lead back out to 6-4 after her 41st goal of the season. 

  • Lainey Byrne collected her ninth goal of the season with 1:46 to play in the first half, putting the Eagles ahead 7-4. 

  • Missouri Baptist didn’t give up late in the first half, as they closed the margin back to two, with 19 seconds to play as Caroline Karr tossed her shot to the back of the net for her 60thgoal of the season, but it was short-lived as RU grabbed their eighth goal of the half, with O’Neil running the field after winning the draw to put the Eagles ahead 8-5 as teams head into the locker rooms for halftime. 

  • RU pushed their lead to 10-5 early in the third quarter as O’Neil buried the shot just minutes into the second half, for her 43rdof the season. Natalie Patrick comes up with the big save 40 seconds later to keep the Spartans' deficit at five. 

  • The Spartans earned a free position shot, but Madison Hasty came up with the big save for the Eagles to keep the score line at 11-5. 

  • MBU got the goal they were looking for at the 5:52 mark of the third quarter from Miller cutting the score line to 11-6. 

  • MBU continued to have a strong defensive stand late in the third quarter as Amelia Shaw held strong between the posts when called upon down the stretch. 

  • With just under two minutes to play in the third quarter, the Spartans picked up a massive free position shot and goal from Miller to now trail 11-7. 

  • RU continued to be relentless on the offensive end of the field, putting up two more goals in under a minute as they led 14-8 with 12:04 to play in the match. 

  • MBU picked up their first goal of the fourth quarter with 10:23 to play, cutting the margin to five, 14-9. 

  • The top-seeded Eagles of Reinhardt held strong down the stretch for the 17-10 victory as they advance to the semifinal game tomorrow afternoon.  

 

No. 4 SCAD Savannah (Ga.) def. No. 5 Indiana Tech, 15-4 

  • SCAD Savannah (Ga.) opened the scoring early in the second game of the day as Clarke Haas found the back of the net after only a minute and 15 seconds of play for her 75th goal. 

  • In their first appearance at the NAIA Women’s Lacrosse National Championship, Indiana Tech got on the board early, tying the game at 1-1 after just four minutes of play. 

  • The Bees, however, would find some rhythm quickly in this game, going up 4-1 after three minutes of game time rolled off the clock. 

  • The Warriors defense locked down after three unanswered goals. With five minutes to play in the opening quarter, the Bees were outshooting Indiana Tech 8-3 and 7-2 with shots on goal. 

  • SCAD earned another free position shot, which Keagan Plume capitalized on pushing their lead to four with her 23rd goal of the season. 

  • It wasn’t until the 4:24 mark, that the Warriors answered back as Michelle Farrell picked up her second goal of the game and her 55th of the season. 

  • IT continued to battle late in the second quarter, when Faith Donnally sent a shot to the back of the net, cutting the margin to four with 7:43 to play in the first half. 

  • Kat Hoff continued to have a stellar first half for Indiana Tech, making ten saves in just 26 minutes of play against a relentless Bees offensive push. 

  • Both teams came back to the turf and started the third quarter on fire. The Bees struck first pushing their lead to 8-3, but the five-point margin was short-lived as three minutes later, the Warriors scored one of their own out of the stick of Farrell for her 56th of the season. 

  • SCAD then scored a pair of goals just a minute and nine seconds apart, to extend their lead to six, 10-4 with 6:41 to play in the third quarter. 

  • The third quarter was all SCAD Savannah as they outshot the Warriors 14-3 and secured six more groundballs than Indiana Tech. 

  • The Bees had a strong showing to open their tournament run today, dominating Indiana Tech in shots (46-15), shots on goal (37-7), draw controls (16-7), near perfect on free position shots (7-of-11) and a perfect 18-for-18 on clears. 

  • SCAD Savannah will play tomorrow at 3 p.m. EST against the top-seeded Eagles of Reinhardt. 

 

No. 3 Lawrence Tech (Mich.) def. No. 6 Benedictine (Kan.), 16-11 

  • In a rematch of the 2022 National Championship game, the Ravens struck first in the third game of the day as Kaylen Moore recorded her 51st goal of the season at the 12:30 mark to put Benedictine ahead 1-0. 

  • Once we crossed the midway point of the first quarter, Lawrence Tech (Mich.) and BC began to settle in after Alaina Smythe scored the tying goal for the Blue Devils with 7:29 left in the quarter. 

  • The tied game wouldn’t last long as the Ravens put two in the net with Chanterra Allen and Elizabeth Pluta just a mere 40 seconds apart to lead 3-1. 

  • Benedictine tuned up their offensive power in the second quarter of this matchup, adding three goals over four minutes of play to start the second quarter to lead the defending national champions 6-1. 

  • LTU scored just their second goal of the game with 10:47 to play in the second quarter as Reece Nemeth recorded her eighth of the season. 

  • With back-to-back shots, the Blue Devils come clawing their way back into the game as Alaina Smythe scores her 55thof the season and Vander Zwaag cashes in on the man-up opportunity for her 25th of the season to cut the margin in half. 

  • Hannah Dean brought the margin to just one goal with 7:09 to play in the first half with a much-needed goal, after the Blue Devils defense earned a huge stop just a minute prior. 

  • Lawrence Tech knotted the game at 6-all after earning a free position goal with 4:40 to play in the first half making it five straight goals for the defending national champions. 

  • LTU continues to ramp up their offensive pressure as the first half draws to a close, with their sixth and seventh straight goals to lead the Ravens 8-6 with under three and a half minutes to play. 

  • Benedictine was unable to hold off the Blue Devils' offense late in the first half as LTU scored their eighth goal in a row as Jocelyn Vander Zwaag scored her 27thof the season with just over two minutes remaining in the first half. 

  • The Ravens had a great free position look to cut the score and they were able to do just that as Kaylen Moore converted on the man-up free position shot to cut the deficit to two with under 90 seconds in the half. 

  • LTU began second-half play where they left off, adding two more goals from Smythe and Sydney Robinson, pushing their lead to 11-7. 

  • BC found their first goal of the third quarter with 5:23 to play, closing their deficit to three as Moore picked up the much-needed score. 

  • Benedictine opened the final quarter with a pair of goals, to bring the score within two. 

  • The Ravens tightened the score even more with 10:22 to play in the final quarter as Elizabeth Pluta connected for her 58th goal of the season and now only trailing by one firing up the Ravens crowd on hand. 

  • With 9:03 to play in the match, Smythe secured another goal for the Blue Devils, then four minutes later, Hannah Huebner added the 14th goal of the game with a man-up scenario. 

  • With just under four minutes to play in the game, the Ravens called for a timeout as they trailed LTU 15-11. 

  • The Blue Devils head back to the semifinal game for the second time in as many years behind a dominant three-quarter outing after only one goal in the opening 15 minutes of play. 

  • LTU narrowly outshot BC 32-29, while both teams posted 14 draw controls.

     

 

No. 2 Cumberlands (Ky.) def. No. 7 Keiser (Fla.), 18-13 

  • After 14:31 of game time and six Patriot goals from as many different players, the Seahawks get on the board with their first goal of the game from Hayley Frew. 

  • The opening quarter of the game was all Cumberlands as they posted ten shots, eight shots on goal, four draw controls, and were 4-for-4 on clears. 

  • The Patriots attack continued to be relentless in the second quarter as Morgan Terpstra, Anna Lobbezoo, and Aleyah Belton all recorded goals for UC to push the lead to 9-1 with 10:49 to play. 

  • Keiser was able to answer a minute later with Sydney Passaro finding the back of the net for her 13thgoal of the season, but Cumberlands continued to push the pace of the game as Lobbezoo added another UC goal with 8:18 to play in the half for the 10-2 lead. 

  • The Seahawks began to storm back in the third quarter of play as Foley netted a pair just minutes apart, and Esher picked up a goal of her own with 9:35 to play in to come within two of tying the game. 

  • Keiser continued to battle their way back into the game down the stretch of the third quarter, as they began to hold the Cumberlands offense quiet and find their rhythm on the offensive end of the field as multiple ladies earned goals to cut the margin to two with one-quarter of play left. 

  • Keiser entered the fourth and final quarter of play and quickly tied the game up at 11-all just 59 seconds in as Foley found Madison Andrews to bury a shot and come even. 

  • Shortly after KU tied the game at 11, they took their first lead of the game as Andrews scored the free position shot giving the Seahawks the 12-11 advantage. 

  • Just 12 seconds after a free position miss, Ashlee Baker drew the Patriots back even at 12-all before Lobbezoo found Marisa Helsten to score the go-ahead goal. 

  • Cumberlands outlasted the Seahawks in the final minutes of the game as they were able to add a pair of insurance goals to punch their ticket into tomorrow evening's Semifinal round.
