2021 NAIA Softball World Series Day Two Recap

COLUMBUS, Ga. -  After day two of competition four teams are set to advance to Saturday play, two teams ended their season and one game was postponed until morning due to weather. 

Day Two Highlights 

No. 5 Ottawa (Kan.) defeats No. 8 Milligan (Tenn.), 3-1, Box Score

  • After four games of play, two teams battled though elimination to advance and two teams closed out their 2020-21 season.
  • No. 8 Milligan (Tenn.) and No. 5 Ottawa (Kan.) took the field first on Friday morning playing the first game of the second day of the 2021 NAIA Softball World Series.
  • Milligan finished the season 32-9 overall (22-4 Appalachian Athletic Conference), winning the AAC regular season for the first time since 2012.
  • Similar to their game Thursday evening, Milligan put up a strong defensive effort against Ottawa.
  • However, Ottawa was determined to bounce back from their loss the day prior and battled to pull out a 3-1 victory.
  • The Brave’s 3-1 win marked Jay Kahnt 500th career victory.
  • Ottawa took the lead in the bottom of the third inning. With a runner on both first and second Allison Kearney hit a hard bunt that went past the pitcher and first baseman scoring both runners on base. Giving the Braves a 2-0 lead.
  • Ottawa (Kan.) scored once more in the third inning with RBI single from Jillian Kygar.
  • The score would remain 3-0 until the top of the sixth, when the Buffaloes Grace Jones hit a triple to send Savannah Nocera home, earning their only two hits and one run of the game.
  • Katie Cronin set the Milligan single-season record for batting average with a final mark of .519 (70-for-135)
  • Ottawa (Kan.) will play Mount Mercy (Iowa) Saturday at 10 AM EST

No. 10 Houston-Victoria defeats No. 3 Olivet Nazarene (Ill.), 3-2 | Box Score

  • After a handful of pitches thrown a heavy rain momentarily paused play
  • Hour and 40 minutes later the game resumed and the Jaguars took an early lead when Ashley Reyna hit a sacrifice fly to left to bring one run in.
  • Olivet Nazarene answered at the plate in the bottom of the first hitting two key hits resulting in one run to tie the game 1-1
  • In the third inning Tigers picked up momentum when Miranda Southall stepped up to bat and hit a triple. An error from Houston-Victoria (Texas) allowed the score. Giving Olivet Nazarene the 2-1 lead.
  • The score stayed consistent until the 7th inning when Houston-Victoria found their bats and strung together four hits to score runs to take the lead and win the game.
  • The Tigers put a runner on first with two outs but could not even the score ending their season with an overall record of 34-8 at their first World Series appearance since 2014.
  • Overall, there were 15 hits amongst the two team’s one of the highest in the World Series thus far.
  • Houston-Victoria will play the loser of the Southern Oregon vs. Bethany (Kan.) on Saturday at 1:00 PM EST

 

No. 2 Oregon Tech defeats No. 7 Mount Mercy (Iowa), 11-5| Box Score

  • Despite the hour set back due to weather Mount Mercy (Iowa) brought the energy at bat. The Mustangs strung together three hits in the first inning taking a 2-0 lead.  
  • Wasting no time Oregon Tech answered capitalizing on three Mustangs errors resulting in eight runs off only five hits.
  • In comeback attempt, Mount Mercy plated two top of the third to make the score 8-4.
  • The Mustangs tried again in the top of the fifth, hitting back-to-back singles and a walk, but fell short stranding three on base at the end of the inning.
  • Towards the end of the game Oregon Tech added three more runs while Mount Mercy was only able to respond with one making the final score 11-5.
  • In total there were 22 hits and 16 runs, however only seven of the runs were earned.
  • This victory for the Owls makes it their 11th straight and seventh straight victory on the mound for Sarah Abramson.

 

No. 1 Southern Oregon – 1 No. 9 Bethany (Kan.) – 0 | bottom of the 4th inning | Live Stats

  • The final game of the night was cut short due to weather, but Southern Oregon took an early 1-0 lead over Bethany (Kan.) before the game was paused at the bottom of the 4th inning.
  • Southern Oregon had four hits, led by Allie Stines who hit a solo homerun in the second inning. This marks Stines fourth homerun of the season.
  • The game will resume play tomorrow at 10 AM EST at South Commons Sports Complex.

 

The remaining four games scheduled for tomorrow will be played at the following times:

Game 9 – 11:30 a.m. EST – Ottawa (Kan.) vs. Mount Mercy (Iowa)

Game 10 – 2:00 p.m. EST – Loser Game 8 vs. Houston-Victoria (Texas)

Game 11 – 4:30 p.m. EST – Winner Game 8 vs. College of Idaho

Game 12 – 7:00 p.m. EST – Oregon Tech vs. Madonna (Mich.)
