• Despite inclement weather in some locations, the NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Round Day Two was completed. Overall, 30 games were played around the country. That sets the table for “championship day” Wednesday on the third and final day from 10 Opening Round sites.
• The hosts sported a 7-6 mark today to push the 2016 opening round host record to 15-8.
• Within the group of 10 hosts, seven of them are still alive in the championship round tomorrow: Auburn Montgomery (Ala.), Georgia Gwinnett, Lindsey Wilson (Ky.), Morningside (Iowa), Oklahoma City, Simpson (Calif.) and St. Gregory’s (Okla.).
• No. 4-seed Doane (Neb.) participated in two extra-inning contests today. Playing in the elimination round of the Oklahoma City Bracket, the Tigers defeated No. 3 Friends (Kan.), 1-0, in eight innings before bowing out in an 18-inning affair by a 1-0 count against No. 2 Houston-Victoria (Texas).
• Houston-Victoria’s Michelle Revels singled home Krissa Powell, who tripled to lead off the 18th, for the game-winner against Doane in the Oklahoma City Bracket. Pitcher Haley Beam tossed all 18 innings as she allowed eight hits and struck out four batters for the victory.
• The 18 innings played by Doane and Houston-Victoria set the all-time Opening Round record for longest game. In 2013, Bellevue (Neb.) and Oklahoma City squared off in a 13-inning contest.
• In recorded NAIA history (regular-season and postseason) overall, the 18-inning game is tied for third on the all-time charts for longest contest. The longest one in recorded NAIA history is 22 innings between Morningside (Iowa) and Westmar (Iowa) in 1983.
• Webber International (Fla.), Indiana Wesleyan and Great Falls (Mont.) are looking to become the first-ever No. 4 seeds to win their respective Opening Round championship. Webber International is 2-0 and needs just one win Wednesday -- played against top seed William Carey (Miss.) in the Reinhardt (Ga.) Bracket -- to earn the championship. Both Indiana Wesleyan and Great Falls would each have to win twice tomorrow to punch their ticket to the World Series.
• The No. 1 seeds went 10-4 today to run the mark overall to 18-6 amongst the hosts.
• After setting an all-time Opening Round record with 19 strikeouts yesterday, Saint Xavier (Ill.) pitcher Nicole Nonnemacher fanned 14 batters in the Cougars 5-1 victory over host and No. 2 seed Georgia Gwinnett. The senior has now reached the 400-strikeout threshold on the season.
• Since the opening round format began in 2013, the top seed has been the champion in 21-of-30 events. The No. 2 seed has won seven opening rounds, while No. 3 College of Idaho (in 2014) and No. 3 Dickinson State (in 2015) are the only No. 3 seeds to win their events. There has not been a No. 4 seed to win the opening round.
• The 10 Opening Round champions will meet up at the NAIA Softball World Series in Sioux City, Iowa for a seven day, double-elimination event starting on May 27. There are four games during each of the first three days (Sunday is an off day); three games on June 1; two games on June 2; World Series championship final on June 3 (if necessary game to follow).
• The 10-team World Series bracket will be officially announced Wednesday, May 18 after the Opening Rounds have been completed (late in the day).
