• No. 1-seed Mobile (Ala.) became the first team to capture a berth in the NAIA Softball World Series after an Opening Round clinching win over No. 2 St. Gregory’s (Okla.), 3-2, in 10 innings. The Rams advance to their 18th all-time World Series, and first trip since 2012. Mobile had to play four games today, including three against St. Gregory’s, to advance into the championship if necessary game. Extra games were scheduled for today in advance of potential weather coming through Oklahoma on Wednesday.
• Two teams posted no-hitters in today’s action: Cassie Jones of Auburn Montgomery (Ala.) went seven innings in a 3-0 win over Davenport (Mich.) and Campbellsville’s (Ky.) duo of Victoria Decker and Neely Quint allowed zero hits in a 5-1 win over Indiana Wesleyan. The lone run was unearned in the fourth inning.
• Saint Xavier (Ill.) pitcher Nicole Nonnemacher tied an Opening Round record with 17 strikeouts in the 3-0 triumph over Avila (Mo.).
• Defending national champion and top seed Auburn Montgomery continued to roll as the Warhawks took down No. 2 Davenport (Mich.) by a 3-0 count. The Warhawks are now a perfect 7-0 all-time in Opening Rounds.
• Two No. 4 seeds will be playing the Opening Round championship tomorrow: No. 4 Madonna (Mich.) in the Concordia (Calif.) Bracket and No. 4 St. Francis (Ill.) in the Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) Bracket. Madonna is searching for its first World Series berth since 2012, while the Fighting Saints have not punched a World Series ticket since 1997.
• Since the start of Opening Rounds in 2013, the hosts have now gone a combined 67-28. Today, the hosts went 10-5.
• The No. 1 seeds went 14-5 today to stand 20-7 overall in this year’s Opening Round.
• In the previous two years, the top seed has been the Opening Round champion in 15-of-20 events. The No. 2 seed has won four Opening Rounds, while No. 3 College of Idaho is the only No. 3 seed to win the event (2014). There has not been a No. 4 seed to win the Opening Round.
• The 10 Opening Round champions will meet up at the NAIA Softball World Series in Sioux City, Iowa for a seven day, double-elimination event starting on May 22. There are four games during each of the first three days (Sunday is an off day); three games on May 26; two games on May 27; World Series championship final on May 28 (if necessary game to follow).
• The 10-team World Series bracket will be officially announced May 13 after the Opening Rounds have been completed (late in the day).
