2013 NAIA Softball All-Americans Announced
By Chad Waller, NAIA Director of Communications & Sports Information
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has announced the 2013 Softball All-America teams, selected by the NAIA All-America committee. Senior Katie Cotta of Concordia (Calif.) is honored as the NAIA Pitcher of the Year and sophomore outfielder Dominique Hannah of Lee (Tenn.) is recognized as the NAIA Player of the Year. The All-America teams are comprised of First Team, Second Team and Honorable Mention selections.
Cotta, a 2012 First Team All-American, led the NAIA in strikeouts per nine innings (17.3), opponent batting average (.061), hits allowed per game (1.75), second in ERA (.037) and strikeouts (327), and tied for sixth in wins (27). Overall, she was 27-2 overall in the circle as she tossed 177.0 innings. She has twirled nine no-hitters to break the NAIA single-season record and overall, compiled 17 shutouts. She was dominant during the regular season as she entered the national championship surrendering a mere three earned runs in 150 innings of work for a microscopic 0.14 ERA. Cotta helped the Eagles to the 2013 national championship, a first in Concordia softball history.
Hannah, the 2013 Southern States Athletic Conference Player of the Year, stood third in the NAIA in total hits (93), fourth in total bases (150), seventh in doubles (22) and 10th in batting average (.482). On the year, she recorded nine home runs, four triples, 30 walks and scored a team-high 63 runs. She hit safely in 49 of 58 games and started the season on a 20-game hitting streak. Hannah led the Lady Flames to a spot in the 10-team national championship in Columbus, Ga.
Since the Player of the Year award inception in 1998, Hannah earns Lee University’s first such honor. Cotta is the first Eagle to become Pitcher of the Year since it began in 1999.
Four individuals are repeat First-Team All-Americans and three others return from the 2012 All-America Second Team.
