No. 2 Lubbock Christian Sets Season SB Record
Story by Chris Due, Lubbock Christian Sports Information

LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 2 Lubbock Christian (Texas) Lady Chaparrals broke the single-season stolen base record on Senior Day sweeping the double-header against the University of the Southwest (N.M.), 2-1 and 6-1, with the three seniors accounting for all six runs in game two.

The three seniors for the Lady Chaps, McKenzie Clemmons, Latainna Eltsosie and Stephanie Rendon were honored between games Saturday and what followed was “senior leadership,” as they won game two 6-1 with all six runs being driven in by the seniors (each accounting for two). LCU only scored in two innings with five coming in the fifth inning and the last coming in the sixth.

In the fifth inning, Clemmons singled down the left field line scoring Katlin Reed, Eltsosie doubled to right field scoring Kirstie Cochran and Mallory Koschany and Rendon followed with a double to left field plating Clemmons and Eltsosie. The damage was a five-run inning off five hits. Clemmons doubled to score Koschany for the lone run in the sixth inning for insurance.

The Lady Mustangs received a solo home run from pinch-hitter Kendra Santillan for their only run of the game.

Clemmons and Rendon each finished the game a perfect 3-for-3 with each driving in two runs. Natalie Ortiz led the way for USW going 2-for-3, responsible for the other two hits in the game for the Lady Mustangs.

Amanda Longorio (8-2) went the distance for the Lady Chaps in the circle giving up only the three hits and allowing the one run with seven strikeouts. Natalie Ortiz (5-5) suffered the loss for USW pitching all six innings allowing 11 hits and six runs.

The first game of the day was a true pitcher’s duel. The Lady Mustangs struck first with Natalie Ortiz hitting a home run off the scoreboard in the first for her first home run of the season. It would prove to be the only run they would score though, as Katera Eltsosie (25-4) was dealing from the circle pitching all seven innings matching her season high of 11 strikeouts, which came in the opening game of the season against Abilene Christian University.

LCU collected a run in the third inning when Mallory Koschany stole third base and came home on a throwing error by the catcher trying to throw her out. The only other run scored in the game came in the fourth inning when Faith Koria doubled down the left field line scoring Ashton Bell.

Koschany was 2-for-3 in the game to lead the Lady Chaps. Brittany Martinez led the way for the Lady Mustangs going 2-for-3. Ciara Fraher (15-8) took the loss for USW allowing five hits but only two runs.

The Lady Chaps stole 10 bases on the day extending their team season total to 231 breaking the NAIA single-season team record of 229 set by Belhaven (Miss.) in 2010. Mallory Koschany leads the team and the NAIA with 64 stolen bases, which places her third on the list of all-time most stolen bases in a single season by one individual. She needs five more to move into second and 17 more to break the record.

LCU wrapped up regular season action finishing 52-7, 22-2 in Sooner Athletic Conference play. The Lady Mustangs are now 24-18 on the season. The Lady Chaps will travel to Oklahoma City to play at the Hall of Fame Stadium for the SAC Conference Tournament starting Friday morning.
