Pool E Recap: Day One (Thursday)

GULF SHORES, Ala. - (UU vs. LWC Box Score) (LCU vs. IUS Box Score) Union (Tenn.) and Indiana Southeast were victorious on day one of pool play action Thursday. The event is being held at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex for the second-straight year.

Union took down Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) by a 6-0 score and Indiana Southeast defeated the pool's top seed, Lubbock Christian (Texas), 7-5. The Grenadiers capitalized on four Lady Chap errors and pounded out 10 hits to rally from a 5-0 first-inning deficit.

The Grenadiers' Kayla Duke overcame the five first-inning runs to pick up the complete-game victory. She limited Lubbock Christian to three hits and three walks, while fanning six. Jade Detzer led the way offensively, going 2-for-3 with three RBI, while Katie Jelinek, Nicole Mills and Summer Sanders each added a pair of hits.

After Lubbock Christian went ahead 5-0 with five runs on one hit and two errors, Indiana Southeast plated a pair in the second and three in the third to tie it up. Sanders started the scoring in the third with a single, and the big blow came when Jelinek swatted a two-out, two-run single to left-center. The winning run came in the sixth when Duke tripled home a run, before coming home to score herself on Detzer's base knock.

In Union's win, Brooke Thomas worked 6.2 innings of two-hit scoreless ball while striking out six before Kelly Robey came on to record the final out of the game.

The Union bats tallied six runs on eight hits off a pair of Lindsey Wilson pitchers. Shelby Lamb finished 3-for-4 with two RBI, Katie Davis went 2-for-4 with one RBI and DeShuni Sanders scored twice and added two hits. Emily Priar finished 2-for-3 for Lindsey Wilson.

The eventual winning run came on Davis' solo homer in the second and the team took command with two more in the third on a two-run blast from Lamb.

In Pool E on Friday, Lubbock Christian battles Lindsey Wilson at 1 p.m. CDT and Union faces Indiana Southeast at 6 p.m.
